I am hitting a wall on my quest for correct shocks. I have a very earlier 1965 non-F41 car. I have been trying to find shocks that are visually correct (realizing that originals are not going to be found for a palatable price). Is there a current day shock that has an exterior casing that is the same or very similar to the originals which could be painted grey and pass judging?

Re: 1965 Shocks
I presume by the term 'pass judging' you really meant to add 'without deduction(s)'... If so, the answer is no.
Your shocks will be viewed for originality against a 5-axis universe of Finish, Date, Installation, Configuration and Completeness compared to known factory originals. Some judges are lazy and don't really delve to the extent of reading the actual emboss + date coding, so you might escape deduction(s) here/there.
But, in general, expect a set of current day service replacement shocks purchased from GM in Delco Remy packaging when you re-paint and install them to shed the Date and Configuration portion of originality.
Some go to Herculean efforts to find, clean up and install used factory original shocks in pursuit of these points. But, when you consider the overall economics of losing 40% or the originality points associated with four parts worth a total of 10 originality points, most consider their restoration $$$ better spent elsewhere! You're talking about 4 points out of the cars' 4500 total available...- Top

Martin -- you mention an 'earlier' '65. Depending on which way you decide to go, here's the numbers off the originals from '65 #014xx. Fronts # 3186906, both dated 160-64. Rears, # 3186907, both dated 203-64. As this car came off the line the first day after the fall strike, you can consider the chassis either Sept 25th (?) or November 6th, and do your comparable date math from there.- Top
