    Painted Transmission?

Have any of you 56/57 race car or tranny experts seen or heard of a white painted 4 spd Tranny?

Art, I don't think this is what you are referring to but around '66-'67 there was a Venetian Red '57/red hardtop that ran at Muncie Drag Strip, I think only once. The engine, a 301 IIRC, headers, bellhousing and 4 speed were painted white (VHT???) as was the inner fenders and firewall. Also, IIRC, the underside, diff and axles, and frame were also shot white and so were the wheels. I think the car was from Indianapolis.

Steve, I think you're right............"I don't think this is what you are referring to".

However, it could be, I really don't know, but I'm willing to consider all info. I'm not an "expert" on the 50's racing, but I have some GM data which indicates that GM ordered some of the race prepared car's transmission's to be painted white and was curious if anyone has seen one. I personally have never seen or heard of anyone discussing such an item.

Art, I would bet the guy painted everything white himself. He even wore a white T-shirt and white pegged pants. The car had no FI emblems and had a radio as I recall.

            Re: Painted Transmission?

Years ago, back in the late '60s/early '70s, one of the guys we used to race roundy-round against painted his engine/trans/diffs white. When we asked why he did that, he replied "So I can see where the leaks are..."
I made the mistake of tellin him that if the stuff was assembled properly, it wouldn't be leaking to start with....
