    Automatic trans for C2

How can a person identify a correct (original) automatic transmission for a 66 corvette small block? Are the 1965 units identical? Measurements, ID numbers and locations, photos, etc. are appreciated.
Is anyone specializing in the repair and / or sale of reconditioned mid year powerglides? Thank you for responding to my request.

all the 1962 and all the midyear Corvettes equipped with automatic trannys from the factory were Aluminum Powerglides(as opposed to the cast iron powerglides used from 1953 thru 1961). while the vette PG shares many common features with its Pass Car aluminum powerglides, the Vette tailshaft has cast-in provisions for mounting the floor shifter. so if ya find an aluminum powerglide with a tailshaft with three bosses , ya probably have a midyear powerglide.mike

early 63 powerglide vettes didn't have the tranny cooler. starting about vin 6000, the 63's got the cooler that was then used thruout the midyear run.mike

Not all the power glides with the mounting boss are the same. I have a 63 so I am familiar with that year. The 63 Impala SS had a floor shifter but the power glide transmission is not the same size as the 63 corvette. There was a short tail shaft and a long one.
To identify the transmission you have in your car take a look at the transmission pan and case. The corvette power glide should have a date stamped in the pan. Get the numbers off the case and compare to numbers listed on the AIM for your year car. I know 63 corvette power glides are different then the other transmissions from that year.
The correct power glide for a 63 is hard to find and expensive I've seen them go for $3000.00.

            Bob,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I failed to mention that I am requesting information on how to identify the 66 Corvette automatic transmission because I am looking for one to replace a turbo 400 that was installed in the car. I do not know what to check or where to check on a powerglide automatic transmission to determine if it is correct for the 66. Any additional information that can be provided is appreciated such as where the pan and case numbers are located and possibly how to identify the long tail shaft style from the short tail shaft. Photos would especially help if anyone might have one.
Thank you again (and all the others) for your continued help.

I think you have to look for the part numbers. Find the correct part numbers for a 66 PG in the AIM. You can purchase this book at the NCRS web site if you don't have one. The tail shaft and main case are clearly numbered. I used this information to locate a correct transmission for my 63. I have seen them show up in the drive line adds and on ebay.
