    Rear Compartment reinforcement rivet 3828470

Anyone know how to set this rivet. It's not upset like the other rivets. Looks like there is a pin inside the shaft.

THis is for the 73 coupe.

I thought I'd add some photos of this rivet.
Photo 3005 shows the rivet in the rear compartment reinforcement bar
Photo 3007 shows the replacement rivet from Caladonia
Photo 3011 shows original rivet taken apart
Photo 3012 show a close up of Caladonia rivet.

The original rivet looks like the slug was pushed in with a punch to expand the shaft. The Caladonia rivet shows that this rivet is not like the ordinary nail type rivets.

Caladonia says that they get these rivets right from the manufactuer of the comparment frames, so they should be like the oriiginals.

So... should I just use an approx 0.100" dia punch to punch in the slug to expand the rivet. I only have six of these rivets and I need the all.

Actually, looking at what was left of the rivet closer, I can see that the original rivet mandrel has a square shaft that was broken off which means that 3828470 is just a regular Pop rivet.

The Pop rivet is between the body and the 3 ft long underbody reinforcement that is put on by the factory first. The flat head rivet that I've shown, just holds on the hinges to the plastic compartment frame. Then the plastic frame assembly is put onto the car with sheetmetal screws.

I found this all confusing since there is 3 different sets of hardware put on at different AIM assembly steps. and factory locations. As a restorer, I only have one step and one location.

I feel like I'm writing my own diary on this thread. Steve L and Steve L, thanks for helping figure this out.

The back side will only be seen by you so how close to factory you make it is up to you if I understand this area. Their were rivets that held the assemby together(on hinge). Their were screws that held the assembly to the body and the metal strip was held in place on the bottom of the fiberglass. I don't think anything on the back side gets judged. Make the assembly look factory from the interior of the car. I have seen a repo assembly and the rivets don't look factory.

          Thanks Lyle,
You make a good point about the large flat rivet that holds the hinge to the frame. On my 73, you actually don't see the flat rivet head since it is trapped between the plastic frame and the body. So the upset side of the rivet is clearly visible when you open up a compartement door. But it looks like they have cut off the mushroom head to make it look more like a shaft on my 73. Originally, this also confused me. I thought I was looking at a small diameter head, not realizing that the head is hidden. I didn't realize this until I started taking the plastic frame out.

They may have removed part of the mushroomed head to give clearance for the hinge when the door is closed?

This whole assembly is a bit of a dogs breakfast. It looks like it was cobbled together to facilitate the different assembly steps at different locations.
