    c3 steering box

Could someone tell me if the mark on the end of the worm gear should be at the 12 oclock position with the steering box centered ? Thanks,Graeme.

Duke Williams wrote a terrific paper on this topic. I followed it when I rebuilt my own steering box. I have it, but it's in .MDI format and I can't attach it. Maybe someone can point to where it can be found online.

Thanks Tom and Robert. I read that excellent article but it didn't mention the chisel mark. Cheers,Graeme.

You didn't mention what year C3. All C3s (except 1968 and early 69) had a flat machined on the input shaft. That flat is always at 12 o'clock when the gear is right on center.

The early C3s had an input shaft that was full round (no flat). I didn't know that there was a mark on the end of the early shafts.

The way to determine the on center position for the early C3s is to rotate the gear full lock to full lock. Count the exact number of turns. (Should be 3.6.) Now go to full lock and come back exactly 1/2 the number of full turns. (Should be 1.8). You now have set the gear exactly on center.

I think it should have a mark on the end of the shaft which should be straight up, 12 oclock position, when straight ahead. My '65 does and I think all the "round shaft" boxes were the same.
