Is it worth detouring from route 66 while in Arizona to Tucson to see the airoplane dead graveyard. It kind of looks like a few hours out of the way. Can someone tell me if it's worth a look or just keep going on 66. Stewy

Re: Arizona route 66 question.
I can't speak from personal experience on the graveyard but I can attest to AZ66. There is so much to see and do on or near the old road including Winslow (remember the Eagles song "Take It Easy"), the Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, the drive from Seligman to Kingman, Oatman, etc. It's a great drive for the entire length.
Of course, if you're big into "aeroplanes", the graveyard is probably pretty darn cool.
Good luck either way. You're gonna love it. When are you crossing the big pond?

Re: Arizona route 66 question.
Michael I remember your tour a year or so ago !!! I couldn't remember your site to look it up again. So I'm glad dangling my hook you took the bait and I can read your trip you guys took again. You did a good job of documenting it if I remember. Thanks I plan on starting the trip from after seeing Corvettes @ Carlisle and fooling around in NY for a few days. Then heading Route 66 down to LA. Being a car freak I don't want to miss any car attractions on the way. Thanks Michael. Stewy- Top

I hope you're shipping that 1960 over so you can drive the Mother Road in style!
Sounds like you've got a great trip planned. I've still not made it to Carlisle. Maybe 2010 will be the year. One thing to keep in mind when you are at Carlisle is that you are about half an hour from Gettysburg. I realize it's American history (not Australian) but the Civil War battle at Gettysburg is a turning point in history. The battlefield is incredibly well preserved and the visitor center is exceptional. If this peaks any interest, check it out. For about $30 you can hire a personal guide to drive with you around the battlefield and get a really incredible description of what occurred over 4 days in July of 1864.
Keep in touch and don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Re: Arizona route 66 question.
Stewart,
Im not sure how far a detour off Rt 66 it is but I can attest to the fact that it is worth the detour. I'm a pilot and got a tour of AF boneyard at Davis-Montham AFB. e also went to the "civilian" boneyard at the PIMA Air Museum. Alot of rare and unique aircraft and worth the trip if you enjoy aircraft. Also Tuscon has alot of attractions as well.- Top
