People should read and know this

This was discussed over at the CF and think it should be noted here!
My membership in NCRS is #182 and I can tell you there are many same #number Corvettes out there. I don't know about today but years ago in Ca. You could show the DMV a seral plate and get a pink slip. Also you could take a frame to DMV and get a pink slip. I've done that and sold just one or the other over time in the past. Any one here remember 003 corvette that sold for a mill but a guy in the mid west had the 003 frame under a 55 corvette. The frame and pic. Was written up in NCRS restorer Mag.many years ago. Now the guy was selling the 003 frame on e-bay not long ago SOOOOOOOOO could we see TWO 003 Corvettes ???.Will the real 003 show up!!! I'm not looking for trouble just ASKING a question!!!
Because DMV's around the country DONT connect or talk to each other there could be two or three same number Corvette out there!!

This is just to have people think before they buy a basket case Corvette.
These are the pic's I took from e-bay showing the frame number.

I really understand why this post may never get any response but was curious about WHO would buy the frame , that's all!!! Because many people now buy basket cases and need to collect parts to finish it . I see many frames for sale on e-bay because many Corvettes are going MOD- which ask the question about a serial tag matching a frame.

Has the frame shown up again? The last time I heard of it, an attorney in Florida had it. Brad Haws in Piney Flats TN either was part owner or going to restore it.

I am told this exact issue has lead to numerous "duplicate" classic cars, some of them quite expensive. I was told there are "duplicate" Ferraries as well as Dusenburgs. I guess one should ask "Is it live, or Memorex?"

I guess this could lead to an interesting debate about exactly what part(s) constitute a car.

I always thought it was dangerous when people build their restomods that they sell their original frames on ebay with their original vin stamping. They should at a minimum grind off the stamping. At least with 53 003 there is factory documentation of the frame swap.

              Hi,
I would be interested in hearing people's thoughts about Terry's point... " exactly what parts constitute a car".

Like in antiques - take an original chair, break the four legs apart, make all the extra parts necessary and assemble same using one original leg in each assembly. Presto, four original chairs that have been "restored."

If you have a frame and bill of sale and I have a vin tag, title and body. I would think that I own the car. I have never sold a frame but I would think that its sold on a bill of sale just like an engine. But I'm not a lawyer????

Re: People should read and know this

This is why I posted this question , some states go by the engine number, people replace bad frames, also later C1's have the ID plate on the steering column. So putting a basket case to gather can be scarry and as the price of these vetts go higher the buyers are more into correct verified numbers. Gives you thought when buying a so called restored Corvette. Then on top of all of this they repro ID tags and any documentation you can think of. There are People that can add engine numbers and broach marks, I see adds with pic's showing a line of C2 frames you can buy and what about there numbers? I'm sure some one can build any year Corvette from the frame up piece by piece starting from nothing that will pas DMV and NCRS.Just takes MONEY

A frame was a "replaceable" item, you just when to GM and ordered a new one. With a body it was a lot different, you ordered separate pieces and fixed what you had if you were lucky. In my opinion the VIN is with the car body itself.

How many Corvette's have had their frames replaced due to rust, resto-mod, wrecked beyond repair?

That # 003 frame is interesting, but like already stated - it was documented to have been scrapped by GM period.

By the way when receiving a frame at a dealer it came with NO numbers stamped in it.

I was until 2000' an independent car dealer in va., when a major component was replaced, I was required to get a new title with bills of sale, part + vin. #'s of vehicle removed from, and the new title was branded as a "reconstructed vehicle". A major component meant engine, transmission, frame, cab or body and even a truck bed, rarely but state police has been on my car lot and did inspect vehicles. Steve
