Later SERVICE replacements (when they were available) were black -- it matched the GM black engines of that time (1980s, maybe?). Originals were painted orange with the rest of the engine at Tonawanda.Terry- Top

Graeme----
My guess is that it was done one of two ways.
First, the supports could have been hung on wires from the engine, painted with the rest of the engine, and later installed. This is how the alternator support bracket used for 66-71 small blocks was painted.
If not the above, then the supports were painted separately in an off-line operation and installed on the engine assembly line.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I would have guessed that the aluminum manifold had a mask of some type which had provisions for the ignition shield supports to protrude from the mask. That is just a guess on my part.Terry- Top
