    camshaft question

Is there any difference between a cam used with solid lifters, versus hydraulic lifters, as in lobe profile, ramp etc? I have a cam with the numbers 2182 cast in it, which appears to be the final numbers for a 71 LT-1 cam. Thanks, Mark

    Mark,

The hydraulic and solid cams are made differently and you cannot interchange lifters. They will work but not very efficiently.

Duke will be along shortly and explain.

      Mark -

      That's correct - it's an LT-1 solid-lifter cam.

        John,
Do you see any problems using this cam in a different block than it came out of? I will use new lifters of course. The lifter bores will probably not be exactly in the same location in the new block, as in the other block, but my thinking is, the new lifters should lap in correctly. Mark

Others' opinions may vary, but I wouldn't install a used camshaft without the lifters that came out with it, in their installed order. A wiped cam lobe means you get to start all over again.

I would almost as soon have a good run in cam than some of the new ones you buy today. Use a good cam breakin lube and it should be fine. I use to use used lifters with a new camshaft when I was young I was lucky to be able to afford the cam much less the lifters. Some of the racers that was factory backed would give us their experimental cams for our street machines in the 60`s and we always used anything that was free. My first cam failures came in the 70`s using new Crane Cam and kits. Seem that 1 out of 2 would fail immediatly. Not only me but I lot of people I knew. Crane was good enought to make them good but a lot of aggrivation. There again some of the things we did probably should have not been done. jmo

if the lifter bottoms are still convex and show no wear i have used the same lifters over again on different cams. with the GM parts cam, springs and lifters there was no problem but with the new stuff now i would not try it
