    trip odometer cable location

    For 1970:

I have a bracket under the dash between the vacuum valves and the e-brake cable where the trip odometer cable is mounted. There are two holes in the bracket that are the same size to fit the cable. Does it go in the hole closer to the steering column or closer to the door? There is another large hole toward the door. What are all these mounting holes for? My car has no options. I'm guessing A/C. The AIM is not clear which hole to use.

I also need to know how this cable is supposed to look exiting the back of the speedo. Mine looks like it makes an immediate 90 degree bend and comes down behind the steel supporting rod that connects the steering column to the door pillar. It looks like a very tight bend and may be the source of my trouble. On the other hand it does not have much of an option.

    Thanks for any help.

    Re: trip odometer cable location

    Hi Greg,
On my 71 there is quite a sharp bend as the odometer reset cable comes out of the back of the speedometer. It fastens in the 1'st hole in the bracket (closet to the steering column). The next hole in the same tab is empty and too small for the odometer reset. There's then another tab with an empty hole and finally the hole for the courtesy light bulb holder.
Your right about the AIM not being too clear. I believe it's indicating that the reset goes in the first hole even though the remainder of the bracket isn't very accurately drawn.

      Alan,

Thanks for the description. I just finished placing it into the hole it was in originally - which is the third one from the column. I guessed it was where it belonged, but I'll have to try the other one now. I had guessed there also because it is lower and more reachable.

The second hole (smaller one) in my car has a screw clip fastener but nothing attached to it.

I don't have a courtesy light! I don't recall being tagged for that in two judging events either. I do have a light above the vent on the kick panel.

      Thanks a million!
      Greg

        Hi Greg,
I'm wondering if the light got moved in 71 because of the change in the dimmer pad which may have led people to kick the lamp with their toe.
It sounds like perhaps you have a diffent bracket on your 70 than the one on my 71. So now I'm curious where your reset cable should be.
        Regards,

          Re: trip odometer cable location

My original owner 70's trip odometer cable is positioned in the bracket hole closest to the steering column.
The hole mentioned to the left of this location is a mounting position for the air conditioning just support brace to be secured.
My courtsey light is located directly above the hood release pull handle.

Well that settles the question of the trip odo cable. The bracket in my car has a location for the courtesy light (a large hole and space for the bulb). The car is a March build. Maybe they moved it?
