    71 differential support removal

    I want to remove the differential support that is mounted to the frame with the large rubber bushings. I removed the 2 bolts and of course the support will not budge. I read where I person used heat to help remove them, but I am skeptical of this, as I don't want to hurt the rubber bushing. I have been soaking it with penetrating oil, but it still won't budge. Has anyone got a good idea on how to safely remove this, so I can sandblast my frame? Thanks, Mark

    Mark,

    I think it may require a four foot pry bar positioned so not to dent the frame and something to catch the crossmember when it pops loose..

      Mark;

      That assembly weighs more than 100 pounds.. I would recommend that you put the bolts back in about half way so that they will hold the assembly up while you use the prybar. I bought a prybar set from Sears a while back and used the longest one to do the job... The bushings will just "pop" out.

      Depending upon how high off the floor you have the car, you can use a motorcycle jack (the type which goes under a Harley) to raise and lower the unit. I've done this a few times on my 1963 and it works just fine.

      Good luck,

      Joel

        Hi Mark,
        I've read some folks report that the rubber makes a sound as it's ready to release. So perhaps listen for that, as a warning, that it's finally coming loose. Many folks mention Joel's point of leaving the bolts in halfway too.
        Good Luck!
        Regards,
        Alan

          Mark -

          You need a REAL prybar (a/k/a wrecking bar) to pop that sucker loose; this is my buddy Rick's favorite - works every time.

            Hi Mark, did it yesterday. With the frame up-side down I used a 2" x 4" to pry it off.Under the mount and over the bump stop bracket.You will need a weighty bloke to stand on the other side of the frame.POP. Cheers,Graeme.
