    "Hi Hat" Screw?

The front of the S tube on a 1965 FI aircleaner assembly is supposed to attach to the radiator support with 4 Hi-Hat screws. What does a Hi Hat screw head look like? Does anyone have a photo of one either installed or by itself? Thanks

Good pix! I've seen different tip styles on used originals as well as different head marks (double anchor, 'A', plain). So, there were multiple suppliers for this fastener...

I'm not sure of all the applications that this screw was for, but do know that I found some on the last '66 that I restored. I also notice that in the '66 AIM that these screws are used on the AC ducting system.

Thanks, I have seen these before. In addition to the S tube, where are they used? What is a good online source of midyear corvette hardware that has good quality photos on their site or in thier catalog?

This is my first time on this forum and I am amazed at the quick responses

I just purchased a 65 FI roadster and am making everything work correctly (parking brake, windshild washers etc), stoping some minor oil seeps and replacing/refinishing worn and ugly parts (seat belt cables, seat belt latches, a few hose clamps, screws ect.).

          Thanks again!

            Mike,

you won't get a correct repro of this bolt. If you look on your heater control cables to heater box. you might find some there or sometimes used as a ground wire bolt. I have many different ones of theis example. You could go junkyarding and look under the dash of a 60-67 GM car your sure to find some. They also pop up on e-bay every once in awhile. I have't listed a set in a few months.

              Re: "Hi Hat" Screw?

I think some make the mistake of using the PN listed in the AIM to 'define' the high hat screw and then look for other situations where that PN is called-out. That method doesn't work!

Many of the fastener PN's are simply generic with a plurality of suppliers qualified under that PN with slightly different variation(s) of the basic part. In this case, there was a price/cost penalty associated with the 'high hat' version of the screw. Deciding where/when to use it vs. a lower cost standard profile fastener was most likely a plant by plant and specific application decision.

The attraction of the high hat screw was it tended to stay 'chucked' in a screw gun and not fall out as easily as its standard head profile brothers when the installer had to articulate to reach the installation position. But, there was a price to be paid for this convenience factor!

Walking the scrap yards, these screws DO show up on other GM/Chevy cars but not very frequently. Knowing where/when to look is the trick to harvesting factory correct originals!

I have and the market has been so 'soft' in the last 6-months that it hasn't been worth the listing fee to offer them...

I guess I will add junkyarding to my list of activities.

                            Mike,

I saw that too but from the picture it appears that they misslabled it and it is 1/4" hex.

ok that may be the wrong one. but I know they sell them. I bought them to use to restore my 66 Chevelle. I bought some kits they sell and they had them in there. you might want to call them. I bought this G-5687. and they sent me the screw you are looking for
