    Two Questions

On restoring my 61 I have two more questions in what must now be a list of at least one hundred.

    1) I just got my Wonderbar Radio back from the rebuilder. I now need to finish the exterior case. It has some surface rust on it and I would like to refinish as original. What is the finish. Can't find anything in my 61-62 Judging Manual on it. Any direction on that?

    2) Rear Springs. Just had the Rear Leaf springs re sprung and re shimmed per original specs. Problem is in the bandings. I got the original correct banding from Corvette Central and took them to a Spring Shop that has been doing C-1 springs for years, even the same man. He kept breaking the bands. He contacted Corvete Central and they sent instructions on how to do them Manually. The Spring Tech would not attempt it. Any experience or suggestions here would be appreciated.

    Re: Two Questions

    Jack,

I restored my '62 leaf springs and banded them myself using banding kits bought from both Paragon and Corvette Central. Think I used the rubber insulation from one kit and the SS bands with the serations (sic) from the other. I purchased a manual banding tool/crimper from the Fastenal company.

Since I have never seen the original banding, I can't confirm that the crimping tool I used resulted in the exact crimping that was done at the factory but it certainly worked and looks great.

Seems like the crimping tool was around $70 which is a much better price than the tools that were once available from CC and/or others.

If interested, I would be willing to loan it.

        Re: Two Questions

The case is clear cad I believe and that would involve complete disassembly of the radio.

Some paint them but it is pretty detectable.

            Jack,

I will email some digital photos of leaf spring banding if you will email me at chiltonla@cs.com. We can discuss its use and whether you want to borrow my Fastenal crimping tool.
