    Patrick -

The top end of the spring should be seated relative to the stop in the shock tower on the frame; where the bottom end of the spring ends up isn't important. The hole in the recess in the lower control arm is for water drainage.

      hi john,

hope I got this right, the AIM called out the top of the spring to be .38 from the stop. I shot for that spec, which "roughly" lined the bottom in the notch- just shy of covering the weep hole.

I will have to check again tonight to confirm.

      Thanks,

      Pat

        Pat,
Thanks for you picture of your set-up, but where is your safety chain?

          Hi Steve,

Yes, for the record, a safety chain was used-can't stress enough how important it is to secure the springs down.

For the picture the spring has very slight tension applied and the rig is lightly tensioned. I left the chain off to show the set up only. The actuall install used a chain.

          Thanks!

I installed the front springs on my project (73 LS-4) this afternoon. I used the threaded rod with a 2"x 6" x 3/8" thick plate, threaded thru the lower A-frame, spring and out the shock tower. The lower A-frame was not attached to the chassis until the spring was compressed and the spindle attached to the ball joints. I then used a jack to position the A-frame and attach to the chassis. The upper rubber bumpers were left off to provide more clearance (folded shop towel to protect the frame) and will be repaced after the engine and body are installed. This was the procedure I used to remove the front spring. Reversing the procedure seemed to work.
