    '66 A/C Suction Throttling Valve

This is on 1963-1966 A/C Corvette Suction Throttling Valve:

Has anyone had any experience in rebuilding their A/C suction throttling valve. I have noticed that on the internet that there are a couple of companys that do this.

Looking in the Long Island catalog I see where they sell a kit. Looks like you seperate the halves and replace, is this all there is to it? Once seperated how would you clean the inside?

Its not got much inside of it. Beware that it is spring loaded. Best to mount in a vise, remove the screws and let the pressure off gently. There is a large spring, a diaphram or gasket you see the edges from the outside and a plunger and cup. it is lubricated with graphite so you shouldn`t have much cleanup unless it got water in somehow. I can email you exploded view to get assembly right. Hope that helps. Mike

        Gary ,

HAving just been thru all that I reccomend you have it done !

I took mine apart and found the inside to be very clean. The problem with these things is the bottom half becomes warped or scalloped from the tension of the six screws , and therefore it leaks along the seal between the two halves. So even if you are adept at these things , buy a new seal ,and put it together correctly, It may still leak!

As I understant it ,Classic Auto Air in Florida rebuilds them and hammers out the bottom half to flat again, before rebuilding. I did not want to send mine out either , so I searched for almost a year before I found someone in my state old enough to know how to rebuild one! They stoped using them in "67" I think. When I did find him I drove 30 miles each way twice to drop it off and pick it back up , and still dont know if it is done right.

In hindsight I should have just sent it to Classic Air and waited for it's return in the mail with a warranty attached !

        JMTCW,

        Jim

Here's a close-up of two NOS Frigidaire STV pistons (thank you eBay).

Can't seem to open up the on-line LIC catalog view for their item # 35-10B piston "kit" so I wonder what else (other than the piston) is included.

I'm surprised they can offer these for $50. -- must have a considerable "stash". Usually for items like this you see "CALL" in the price column .

            Gary,

I found a diagrahm that should help you if you still want to try it yourself.

I tried to post it here but it won't crop down so send me your e mail address and I will email it to you .

Check your surfaces on a piece of flat glass. That should tell you if there is any warpage. Other than that it should be very easy rebuild. Mike

                Hello;
If your working on a '66 the STV was used '62-'65 metal cars & '63-'65 Corvette.
'66 up is a POA(Pressure-Operated Altitude) Valve used to stop frosting of Evaporators.
                Regards.

The STV valve was used in the '66 Corvettes. '67 Corvettes used the POA valves.
