    vacuum relay restoration

Does anyone know who restores vacuum relays for wipers and headlights. I have not been able to locate anyone who does this. Any help out there?

Try Corvette Forum FAQ it you want to do the job yourself. Just buy new ones if the cover being different is no a problem.

Or buy a new one and put the old cover on it to look original and function like new. All you have to do is uncrimp and recrimp the ring that holds the cover on. It's not hard.

Mine did not require any mechanical work and functioned properly. I sent them to Richard Fortier for cosmetic restoration. They turned out great.

          Kim,

Try Caledonia Classic Cars in Belding, MI (888)245-5224

They did mine many years ago; current catalog shows it at $163.00

I recently removed one from my '72 with a severe leak. How in the heck do you remove and recrimp this without ruining it??? I'm impressed that anyone even tried this!

            Thanks

Randy - it's not hard but it's tedious. I simply used a screwdriver all along one side of the ring to pry it open. Prying at points right next to one another causes the least damage to the ring.

Yes, the side of the ring you pried will have little ridges that you can't get out. BUT, if you put the untouched side of the ring up, it's almost impossible to see the pried side of the ring underneath. Then it's just a matter of using pliers to gently recrimp the ring back in place. The cover is spring loaded, so you have to hold it in place for the first fews recrimps.

I've used them in judging and no one knew the difference. Here's a thread to show you how mine came out.

Pat - nice work! It's a lot cheaper to buy a repro for parts instead of one of the rare relays that still have the right stamping!

                Thanks
