My '66 coupe has four red tail lights and thus no back-up lights. As I understand it, in '66 the back-up lights were standard (I also see no option to that effect on my tank sticker or window sticker). So in judging, is there or what is the deduction for no back-up lights? I notice the sockets are hanging from the wiring harness at the rear and have been replaced by tail lights and red lenses jumper wired from the outboard side. I am trying to see if it is worthwhile to put them back. Thanks.

Re: Back-up lights on '66/NCRS judgiing
No tank sticker in '66. According to the 4th edition JG you should have two inboard clear lights for backups. Designation with "Guide B1-58" on the lens. I would put it back correctly as back up lights would aid a little bit at night.- Top

OK, thanks it will be easy to replace. Guess what I have is a dealer invoice or worksheet, but it is old, stained, and torn and the previous owner called it a tank sticker. Good to know there were no tank stickers in '66. I guess '67 was the first ones?Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Michael may not be as easy to replace as you think? Remember if you dont have backup lights now. You will need to install a back up light switch at the tran's, plus wireing??

Re: Back-up lights on '66/NCRS judgiing
This isn't as easy as you might think. If the car was converted for standard rear lights, then you will need to replace or modify some or all of the following: Rear wiring harness, dash harness, inner tail light housings including bulbs and lenses, back up switch assembly on transmission, and turn signal flasher. So depending on what all was done previously, this could be a pretty big job and not cheap.
I believe some very late 66's had tank stickers as well. So depending on when your car was manufactured, it is possible it had a tank sticker.- Top

My car has a build date of Dec. 10, 1965. In looking at what the previous owner called a "tank sticker", it has the dealer's name and logo on top, so I'm pretty sure it is an invoice or workorder.Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: Back-up lights on '66/NCRS judgiing
As I said, in looking at the rear of the tail lights area, the wiring harness has two sockets (without bulbs) hanging out of it. I assume those are the old back-up lights. The inboard tail lights (red lenses now) have a jumper wire spliced into their sockets from the outboard tail lights. So I am planning on putting bulbs into the empty sockets that are dangling from the harness, putting it in reverse and seeing if they light. If so the switch and wiring are connected and all I would need to do is put a white lense (correct code of course) in place of the red one, remove the jumper wired sockets from the back of the tail light assemblies, plug in the original back-up light sockets that are hanging, and voila, fixed. Of course if the back-up switch has been removed at the tranny, well more work needed. I don't have a hazard flasher, so that is not an issue. And anyway, I guess the deduct for leaving it the way it is is not many points anyway, what maybe 3-5? I have seen many '66 and '67 with four red tail lights. I guess I could also convert to Calif. 6 tail lights and have the middle ones backup lights too? NOT.This isn't as easy as you might think.
