Assure me that no one on this DB "bought-it-now"

eBay -- purported '65 tanker in Germany; listed about a week ago; "buy-it-now" was $160,000.00 (includes free shiping to US ) Five days later , Friday Oct 29th, was bid up to a nosebleed $100. (by 12 bidders). Then, last night, about midnight EDT, "someone" jumped in and bought-it-now, with about 20 hours still to go on a 7-day auction. Seller has a feedack rating of 85%, which, for those of you who never visit eBay, is the lowest I've ever seen; [red flags should go up if it goes below 97%, IMO].

I asked seller a simple question about the trim tag a few days ago -- no answer. Seller makes following FALSE claims in description: J56, teak, side exh (rocker panel hangers visible in pics); $6000. to finish bodywork & paint (yeah, right). Pictures are so fuzzy, it's impossible to confirm original N03 components.

Even if seller bought it back (like at Barrett-J), there's still a minimum eBay fee, right ? As I say in the title; hope the buyer (if there is a legitimate one) is not one of us.

Re: Assure me that no one on this DB "bought-it-now"

On your question about "ebay fees", I will add a bit of information.
Used to be long ago... (sounds like a fairy tale right)
      The selling of automobiles and a couple of other items (boats come to mind) DO NOT follow the regular fee structure on ebay. Used to be;
It was $40 to list the car, and another $40 if it sold. I am sure this was to encourage sellers to list cars as the high priced ones would have enormous fees to sell (I always say roughly 5%), with the "normal fee structure". This may have vairied by a few dollars if you were pursuaded to buy some of the extras ebay pushes on you (e.g.-BOLD type and extra pictures).
I actually just had a car (not a Corvette) listed on ebay last week, and found when I went to list it (it had been almost a year since the last I had listed a car there) that the new fee structure had changed significantly. They try to make you think for the better, but I would disagree myself.
Now your initial listing is "FREE" (yea-right), and I purchased the picture pack that lets me list up to 24 pictures for $2, and had a "buy it now" that cost an extra dollar. So, my "listing fee" was a total of $3. Sounds good so far, but when I read along further I see that now if the car sells the FVF (what they call the "final value fee" or selling fee), is now $125. Still not bad to reach a large audience, and still cheaper than a classified in the local paper for a week including the Sunday edition (for those places that they still deliver a "real" newspaper 7 days a week-which is NOT in Detroit). If you are well versed in "ebay", you can do a couple of things to go on these fishing expeditions as some sellers seem to do. You can cancel bids and "end the auction" at anytime, save the $125 and still maybe have a potential buyer out there (sellers gets to see this information-bidders do not). If someone did use the "buy it now" on the ad you mentioned, they would be assessed the $125. If they are not legitimate (which this ones smells of), they can then go through the process of a deal that fell through, and receive a credit on their ebay account for the $125. Just thought I would chime in on this as you asked about ebay fees, and maybe this will help some of you guys weed out some of the scams.
Hope this was helpful to someone,
      Lynn Houk

        Wayne
I asked the guy to give some more info so I could log it into the data base I got from you on tankers and now have converted to an electronic version He sent me a photo of the trim tag and refused the serial number as he explained quote "The experts says that we should not give the vin number of the rare cars because here in Germany and I think in US there is a risk that the cars could be rebuild with the original vin number. "

I added it as best as I could but something is fishy in Denmark

I got a kick out of the photos on the ebay listing. All the photos were in color, except the photo of the interior rear area where the big tank was located. The seller uploaded a black and white photo of a big tank area--obviously scanned from some publication of a different car. Give me a break.

Might have been a foriegner taking advantage of the currency differences of the last few years. Let's see, hmm, $160,000 US probably translates into about $3,200.00 for him. He's loving that Hope and Change!

Tony / Jimmy -- yeah, that blk/wht pic was what prompted me to "ask a question" to the eBay seller (to which he never replied). My thinking is that it would be less intrusive to ask the trim code, which for any two-tone interior would show the letters suffix for N03.

Jimmy -- was the trim tag readable ? Could you post or PM me the numbers, so I could at least bracket the production timeframe and be on the lookout the next time it pops up.

From that b/w pic, I'm guessing that it has the long /sharp nose service cover. I don't think the blunt nose covers were ever sold separately, except maybe during the years that 36.5 gal was available. Also looks like it's carpeted, which many owners did back then (mine had red shag ). Also, in the color pic of the underside, you could see the sumps X-over fuel line [could be faked for the eBay presentation]. Aren't we a bunch of cynics ! But it's called self-protection.

On the other hand, for some unexplained reason, there was a disproportionate number of tankers ordered in Europe. Not like they have to drive vast distances for a gas station .
