    64 Cluster wiring HELP (capacitors)

    Hi,

Corvette Specialties did a wonderful job of restoring my cluster and she's almost completely hooked up except:

There are two capacitors: one on the top with a "press into the wire" connector and one at the bottom adjacent to the light switch with a bare male spade plug. Can someone tell me where these go? I have a brown wire with a female spade that's loose and that's about it.

    Thanks in advance!

    Andrew,

The cap by the headlight switch gets bolted next to the ammeter guage and the bare end goes into the ammeter plug to be attached to the ammeter.

There should be another by the ignition switch that plugs to the brown wire. The cap on top I can't seem to remember so check your AIM for 1964.

Oh I checked both the AIM and the Lectric wiring diagram but they are both about as helpful as the descriptions at CorvetteCentral like "cap behind cluster"... Gee thanks.

OK, so as I look through my parts box and on my cluster and refer to caps online at CorvetteCentral, I come up with:

      1. Cap by light switch (plugs into open socket in ameter plug)..Thanks
      2. Cap at top of cluster (funky connector jacks into existing wire)?
      3. Cap I don't have (marked DR) mounted by ig switch which plugs into brown wire (referrred to as the "radio" cap in the wirig diagram)
      4. Then there's a "turn signal cap" which mounts heaven knows where and
      5. a cap listed as "capacitor on brake light switch" which hooks to ????

Now I'm in really deep yogurt LoL...

Sorry the picture is very poor however it shows the first three caps of your inquiry. The last two are not on cluster.

Here is your #4 located on fuse box (another poor picture) This one is a real PITA to install.

Do not have #5 for the brake - can not get at car right now however its another one like the fuse box as I recall. (try a search believe its been discussed)

Most 'hush up' caps are associated with the radio option... When you checked the AIM, did you flip to the back where option U69 is called out? I thought the pix were pretty clear...

I have the same question for the 66, ignition switch cap. On my cluster there is no evidence of this one being bolted under a screw. THe upper one slide on the tang, the LH on the black wire off the amp circuit and all show evidence of being whree they should be.

Does any one have a clear point of there this cap should go?

Also what does an original cap look like?

                Drew -

Those capacitors are all shown in your '64 Assembly Manual, section U69, Sheet 6.00. The one at the top with the ScotchLok-type connector goes on the tan wire to the "Brake" warning light socket. The one adjacent to the ignition switch connects to that brown wire.

Thanks John - this is what I deducted from the manual - but my cluster shows no evidence of that cap ever being under that screw. the other caps have a shadow, oxidized around and shiny (realtive) where the cap was protecting the surface. Sounds like a put it whree it is supposed to be abd move on.

I'm curious what trade mark or detail is on the end of the cap, do you have a picture of that?

                    thanks again,

Photo below is of the end of the capacitor used on the battery gauge; the rest are similar, but have different part numbers based on the wire and terminal configuration, as shown in the Assembly Manual.

Thanks - nothing like what is in there nor what I got from Paragon. Any better source for these?

                          Ron -

Long Island has them (I think they're the manufacturing source), but I haven't seen any of theirs.

                            Thanks Guys!!!

                            So, in summary:

The one at the top with the ScotchLok connector clips onto the tan wire to the "Brake" warning light socket.

The one adjacent to the light switch goes into the open socket in the ammeter plug.

The one adjacent to the ignition switch connects to brown wire in the harness.

The one at the fuse box is for the goes to both the flasher connectors. It has two v-spades and looks remarkably like a tan M80.

The "other" tan M80 mounted to the brake assembly goes to both the brake switch connectors

                            Is that a fair summary?

I did find the info in the back of the AIM in U69 after it was pointed out to me (duh) Still better to get feedback sometimes.

                            We're in the home stretch!

The starting point was a rusted-out NOM from Detroit BUT all three owners for the past 20 years had kept the original engine with the intention to put her back in shape. Now matching numbers and rebuilt ground-up. Another couple of weeks and she's rollin'. www.myspace.com/andrewpalenscar under pics... 12 months and about 70 grand. Glad she's breathing again.

                            Thanks for the help!
