    1960 speedometer removal

    I need to repair my speedometer and was wondering if someone could post a brief explanation for removing it? I don't think it's a big deal but since I've never done it before and don't have a manual for this car I though it would be wise to ask first.

    Greg;
    You need to remove the instrument cluster from the dash. Other then removing the wires there are 5 or 6 screws that go up into the housing that need to be removed along with the steering wheel.

      Thanks Bruce, sounds like it's pretty straight forward then.

        Removing the instrument cluster isn't difficult but it is time consuming. All wires should be labled. Figure a couple hours to remove it and a couple to replace it.

        Be careful when reinstalling it not to scratch the steering weel hub. I would tape up the hub with a couple of layers of blue masking tape. There is also some postings to support the housing on a wood dowel when reinstalling it and making all the connections.

          Greg,

          If you have an ST12 the Corvette service and tech guide there is a step by step procedure on page 1-6. The ST12 is cheap and a great resource.

          The last instrument panel I removed I did not disconnect the oil and other gauges but just took out the 2 screws that hold in each gauge housing, sort of tight but worth not having to remove oil line and wires. Also drop out the ignition switch and disconnect the tach and speedo cables.
          Removing the drivers side seat also makes the job much easier.

          Good luck.
