    Securing points

Is it worth spending a large amount on dismantling your windshield, taking it in and having someone do it right then putting it back hoping it fits right on the body of the car just to gain points for a top flight? If Most everything on car (58) is done right will tinted glass and no date keep me from getting top flight? Naturally it would be nice for resale to get it right but what is tougher finding a correct motor and drivetrain correct, or doing the stuff that you can still make nos and judegable anytime you want? Would love to have windshield correct but do not know if all the time and effort and expense would matter, I know hundreds of you have thought the same thing. Thank You, Brad

Brad if your going to replace the glass why not just put the correctly dated one in ? It's your car you can paint it flouro orange if you like. But it is always nice to see a correct car over a bitsa. It's your car ! Stewy

Brad, Depends on how much you are chasing the points. Now maybe you can find an easier project to do on the car that you are getting beat on.
For example is everything correct under the hood?
Meanwhile have your studied the Judging Reference manual? I am not that knowledgeable on 58's except for the FI's. But I will tell you that the WS is gonna hurt you for judging.
I don't believe a 58 had a "tinted" glass. The gang here will let you know for sure but just guessing I think it's LOF non tinted. So as far as the date goes it's not gonna matter much as the WS may be totally incorrect.

Just looked at my 4th edition 58 to 60 manual. Did you look at it also Brad?. Go to item 5 under exterior. No you are in trouble on the WS. You could suffer a 90% deduction on both originality and condition.
      Non-GM replacement part.
Will a bad windshield keep you from getting top flight you ask?
Doesn't take much to get top flight. It's getting the 97% and over that is difficult. Course that's is just my humble opinion. Good luck, JD

Hi guys, My glass is in pretty good shape but is tinted and no date and I believe it is lof but also has dot on it, wasn't going to change it if I did't have to, so how many points would I loose, and under hood is all correct, thanks again Brad.

Brad, Order a set of judging sheets, a judging manual, and the Corvette Judging Reference Manual like I told you.
I wouldn't consider having a car judged until I did this first. Why??? Because I don't like surprises. Have fun. JD

JD was correct on the "standard deduction" for the glass - it is 90% for both originality and condition

              Brad,

You can download the Judging Sheets for your car from here: https://www.ncrs.org/membership/scoresheets.html

You will find that the windshield is worth a total of 40 points with another 20 for the frame and gasket. The Gasket is supposed to have two 2 small raised ridges on the interior horizontal surface.

You will probably loose 90% on the windshield -36 points. Chances of having a correct gasket are slim so you will loose another couple of points on that if it is incorrect. Total loss of -38 points out of 4510 total points. Pretty insignificant part of the total.

On the other hand you can loose 20 points each for a long list of items that MUST work correctly in the OPS check. Windshield Washers for instance. Parking Brake Flasher or Radio that doesn't signal seek correctly.

Lots of beautiful cars are literally killed during the OPS check. Make sure everything works that you can possibly make work. Double check connections for electrical items. They can work one minute and fail the next with poor grounding or loose corroded connections.

A secret that I use is a tooth pick to paint a tiny bit of Copper Never Seize Emulsion on electrical connections. Permatex makes some called Permatex 81343 in a 1oz tube. Should be enough to do thirty or forty Corvettes.

Great to use on the old battery connections as well. Keeps out the corrosion and lubricates the connection with nearly pure copper.

So true that 40 or 50 points off of 4500 isn't bad but do that too many times and you are out of the running for blue, Thanks guys sorry for late reply, Brad.
