C3 Big block vs Small block

70 - 72 Corvette, Wanted to know if there were any advantages (for lack of a better word) in a big block or a small block. I have heard that the big blocks run hot? I am looking for a car I can enjoy driving. I wanted to hear from owners on both sides. Thanks as always, Joe DeLuca Member 37862.

If you want a car that you can enjoy driving, it's hard to beat a 1970-72 base engine car. All around, it will give you the best BALANCE of everything.

If torque and power (most of which you can rarely or ever use) and "cachet" are more important to you, then a big block is the way to go.

I'd say things pretty much "boil down" to the above.

Joe, I have always been a fan of the BB or special high performance vettes, however as Joe mentioned, whenever it came down to just driving, I'll take the small block every time.

Joe I own one of each and enjoy both but the small block is a dream compared to the larger motor. My wife and I recently drove the small block to the Museum anniversary in the Southeast caravan. The big block does fine until you get in a parade or a traffic jam. Hope this helps.

I have both and enjoy them all but it's hard to beat the level of torque and instant acceleration at any RPM that a big block provides. The BB will heat up a little in traffic on a warm summer day. The 350/350 is also a nice motor that will give you great performance but not at the level of a Big Block. Don't forget the Lt-1 which gives alot of performance in a small block.

Decide what you want to do with the car. If long distance cruising is your idea of fun, Joe Lucia is right -- the base motor will suit you just fine.

If you want some real fun, drop down a year and find yourself a 1969 435hp with M40. Most folks think of the automatic transmission in terms of not having to shift, and forget that it multiplies torque. With the 435/M40 you will be able to burn the hides off of any size tire you can stuff in the rear wheel wells. I have driven a whole lot of C3 Corvettes but the 435/M40 gets my vote for the most thrilling C3 ride.

I have to agree with Paul - and obviously Terry since he owns one - that the LT1 is probably the finest small-block Chevy ever produced. As long as you don't mind adjusting the lifters once in awhile. It's not a overly difficult job but it can be a bit messy.

I think there is one other criteria that must be considered. I have heard many people lament their decision to buy a "high value" car because they've always wanted one. Only to discover that they aren't comfortable driving a "museum piece" for fear of damage or even normal wear. They then cash out so that they can buy a car they enjoy driving on a regular basis. I think most Corvette big blocks and LT1's have now crossed into this territory. I know that if I was ever fortunate enough to own one, it would become a "trailer queen." On the other hand, some people drive their '67 L79's all day long and sleep like a baby at night.

FWIW, I drive my 70 LS5 / 4 speed around, and have been 'stuck in lines of traffic' for periods of time (one time in particular that comes to mind os being stuck in county fair traffic for about a half hour one time abuot a year ago), and really didnt have any issues.

The car wasn't overly hot or anything... though, yes, the footwell area can get warm.

As far as driving it? I love it... I do not have a small block to compare it to, but I would assume the SB would be more tossable around corners and such, but I don't see myself driving the car that hard to ever notice.... I have no issues with the drivability of my BB 70...

I agree on the LT-1. I also prefer any small block to the big blocks. Easier to work on, don't tend to run hot and my wife can drive them witout being terrified.

                      Hi Joe,
I bought my 71 350/270 in 71 and chose a SB because I thought it would make the most sense as a daily driver. I've enjoyed it ever since. I guess if I could make a change it would be to a 70 350/350 rather than a BB.
The engne compartment is quite roomy with a SB, so it's a pleasure to work on.
Good Luck as you narrow your search.
                      Regards,
                      Alan

i think the lt-1 is the way to go. power like the bb and light weight of a sb. without power steering the sb is much easier to drive.

                              Joe,

One of the great things about the Corvettes in that era was there were many engine options to choose from. Something for everybody so to say.

I personally am a big block fan. I have a 71 LS5 and it runs great plus packs a nice punch with very little throttle input. Yes it can get warm inside the cockpit on those summer days and that may be a consideration if you buy a non A/C car. I find the car very easy to drive. In fact I find it interesting that a lot of these cars were daily drivers back then.

Maybe you can find some local owners that would be willing to take you out in a big block and small block so you can decide what you prefer. In the end, it all comes down to what you are most comfortable with and will get the most enjoyment from.

                              Have fun!
