motor is out of 58 and think i found a matching motor for it need help.

    My 58 currectly has a 60 dated 283 in it but think I found a 283 for a 58 atleast was told it was for a 58.

code for the 58 engine I found is: 3756519 and he watns $750 for it.

the serial number for my car is: J58S108524

My question is will that engine jive with my serial number etc before I spend the $750 for it because the 60 dated 283 now is fine.

    thanks for any help

Hopefully the casting number is 3756519,which would be correct for a late '58 such as yours.

What is the casting date and pad stamp?

Yes sorry I missed the 5 in that number!

I didn't write that down but I will next time I'm over there it's a friend of mine who has it

so if that date cast on it is prior to my cars build date going by the vin number it would be matching correct? problem is I have no clue what the build date of my car is just looking at the vin number so I can't compare the 2 even when I get the date off the block.

          Brandon,

Just for grins I tried out the C1 registry web site:

          http://www.c1registry.com/index.php?uid=2865

Their answer seems to agree with the birthday book.

Said I have to subscribe to use it so just to be clear the registry also said July 16th 1958?

because don't trust the date I posted thats me looking at the birthday book and I'm not good with decoding this stuff really.

            thanks for your time!

              Brandon,

You don't have to subscribe. I'm not a member, I don't even have a C1. I was hoping the link I pasted would have your info, but alas it didn't. Anyhow, on the left side, click car birthday, then punch in the last 5 digits of your VIN. I think their guess was within a day of what your birthday book said.

                Brandon,

According to the NCRS pocket guide 9,168 '58 Corvettes were made, your car is a 'late' build so a July assembly date works.

If the casting date and assembly date is OK and you have a Flint block, you need to make sure the assembly stamp is for an engine configuration that was available for a 58 Corvette.

With a 58 I would keep looking until you found a Corvette block because the restamp route is expensive and will likely lead to major point losses for stamp pad finish or the assembly stamp location, font, etc. issues.

whats to restamp? they don't have the vin on it so if it works and says it's a flint 283 for a 58 model and works date wise

and is coded for a 230 245 270hp etc car it should work.

                    i think

                      Brandon:

The NCRS Judging Guide has the following for block casting number:

                      1958 to early 1959: 3737739
                      late 1958 to 1960: 3756519

So...what block casting is correct for a late '58 car?

You may find that all '58s had the 3737739. That's my guess. I think the 3756519 was used in late '58 calendar year (I have an early '59 car with a late '58 3756519 block).

You may want to check with Tim Mickey before you invest a lot in the 519. The reason it's important is because you get most of the block points if the casting number and date are correct for your car. But if a judge knows that the 519 is wrong for your '58 (and the JG does say it is wrong), the point loss is huge.

Brandon - you understand the issue and it makes sense you are trying to avoid a restamp. I would pay less for a 230HP block and pay more for a higher HP block stamp. I would also pay more for a standard bore block and less for a .030 or .040 block.

Yeah thats weird if 7739 is 58 to early 59 then thats late 58's then they say 6519 is late 58's to 60.

makes no sense to me...thats saying the same thing

Sounds to me like the JG text says the two castings were inter-mixed at the end of '58 into early '59...

so let me ask this for a 58 corvette with a corvette birthday saying like august 17th 1958 according to registry since the last 5 digits of serial number are 08524

for your 58 owners which casting number block do you think it probably came with? any 58 owners with build dates near that and know for a fact yours is the original engine to your car if so whats your casting number?

                              thanks, i'm learning!
