I drove my '61 on the road for the first time in 7 years last week! The speedometer was making noise and waving between 20mph and 80mph while the car was going at a steady speed. Will oiling the cable or the speedometer fix this or is something else required? Thanks in advance.

Re: C-1 Speedometer
before removing the speedometer, i'd remove the speedometer cable from its housing, clean and spaingly lubricate the cable. and re-install. don't overdo the lubricant. i use an old AC speedometer lubricant similar to brake shoe white lube.mike- Top

Re: C-1 Speedometer
Hi Richard:
I agree on removing the speedometer cable which is pretty simple. I would clean it well. I have used a spray graphite on mine with good success as I had the same problem. I think it was called loc-ease. Whatever you use you don't want a lot of extra on the cable as the fluid could run up and into the speedometer which may cause you unnecessary grief. Good luck.

Re: C-1 Speedometer
I read somewhere that you should remove the cable and sparingly lube only 2/3's of the cable, leaving the 1/3 nearest the gauge without lubricant. As you drive, the cable will draw up the lube to cover all of it. Too much and the lube is in the gauge, gumming up everything. I believe this procedure applies to the tach and speedo. Also Corvette Centeral sells a cable lube.- Top
