John, the block does have the plug in front and there seems to be a space between the 6 1. No "T" near the casting. Thanks for your input.

Mike, Thanks for your help. Apparently this is a 62 Flint vette block with correct date code. Perfect for my car.

Flint block photos of the front galley 1/8" pipe oil plug and the unmachined area on the rear. Tonawanda blocks didn't have the 1/8" pipe plug as previously noted. Tonawanda blocks milled the surface area in the second photo as their castings were slightly higher than Flint blocks, which were not milled. At least this was the case for '57 blocks and believe it carried forward on all Flint small blocks. If a block has been decked the area in the second photo could show as milled. Gary....

Good photos Gary. Do you agree the Flint blocks have the 9/16" high numerals?

I have two 870, I91 blocks. Above the casting number is 2GM. The casting numbers are a little under 5/8" and they both have the oil plug above the timing cover. One block is a Flint, the other has been decked, but I believe it was a Flint product. I believe both of these blocks were out of station wagons.
I have another 870 block, E82, that is a Flint block out of a Corvette. Above the casting number is 1GM. The casting numbers are a little under 5/8"

Here are pics of a Flint 327 from Impala SS dated three days before my J 19 2 block. Looks like tall #'s well preserved in grease..

read your post in the archives , trying to figure out if this block i have is ok for a 64, seems to be no doubt it's a flint block, it has the plug in the left front, but as you can see the cast #'s are well under 1/2 " and are only 2 5/8 inches long any comments? thanks doug

Yeah, but you forgot the pistons. Going for that full street rod show display, I guess.

The cast date looks like E 29 4 (May 29, 1964), but without better cleanup, it's inconclusive.

I believe that the height of the casting number varied. It was about 1/2" tall at some point, and then about 7/8 tall at another. I don't think that the height is a "cast in stone" (no pun intended) determining factor of a Flint block. The 1/8" NPT plug into the oil gallery can, of course, be added.

What absolutely, positively identifies your block as a real Saginaw casting, is the fact that the casting date characters appear to be iron, and NOT epoxy/bondo/JB Weld). It's possible to transplant the entire casting date and surrounding area from one block to another. The area needs to be cleaned up better, in order to spot that trick, though.

Engine stamp looks like F 05 0I S? Translates to Flint assembly, May 1, 196?, based on suffix. Engine suffix lacks second character. Need better photo of pad, since appearance of characters cause conflict with (apparent) cast date.
