    Emblem on horn button

My 66 roadster horn button emblem has lost all color after 43 years. Short of buying a new horn button I wonder if it is the same emblem that is on my hub cap spinners. (they have lost all their color also, but can be replaced) They both seem to be the same size and both are made of plastic. I have not taken my button apart yet , (rivets hold a back plate in).

Does any one know if they are the same or can the horn emblem alone be replaced?

Jack -- your question piqued my curiosity, so I checked my '65 and yes, the distance from the top of the left flag to the top of the right is the same. Now I know that the spinners have the 3 tabs (not exactly at 120 degrees to each other, so be forewarned). Like you, I've never removed the "snap ring" holding my horn button in place to see if the emblem uses the same attachment method.

I see on eBay that they offer the hubcap spinner centers (some sellers even offer choice of white or black squares on the upper left corner of the crossflag).

I have on my list to replace all the spinners, emblems and supporting rings. Just think, the cost of just fixing my hub caps is more that 15% of what I paid for the car in 1969 ($2,100). The emblems are a lot cheaper than the horn replacement. (almost $60) . I haven't the guts just yet to pop the snap ring and rivets on horn.

I Checked out horn button emblem, it has the same 3 attach points about 120* apart. It makes sense , GM would order 1 emblem for the 66 and use it on wheels and horn. Less tooling . I have not taken out rivets yet to really check it out. I have five hub caps to restore and will order an extra emblem for the horn.

          Changing out the emblems

The rivets are actually hollow posts that have been rolled over like eyelets. Once you carefully grind away just the shoulders, the ring will lift off, as will the plastic emblem. It is the same emblem for the wheelcovers and horn button.

To reattach the retaining ring, some have gone to the trouble of drilling/tapping the posts to accept miniature screws.

I just compress the stack with a weight and apply a drop of JB to the post head. A little dab will do ya...

Wow, Jack -- Never seen a horn button that faded; must'a been on a convertible with much exposure to the sun.

Look closely; the rivets are not equally spaced (less arc between them at the bottom of the flags).

Yes a L79 66 roadster that I bought in 1969 and have put over 250,000 miles on it. Lots of driving with top down. The spinner emblems are also completely faded. I did not realize the horn was suppose to have colors , it faded so gradually, that I forget it was colored until I started to work on hub caps.
