    Oil Pump Cover Gasket ?

I am reassembling a 73 LS-4. I removed the plate on the oil pump to inspect the interior, pump gears and secure the pickup.

Included in the Felpro gasket set is a thin gasket that fits between the pump body and cover. I do not remember seeing a gasket when I took my pump apart.

Is a gasket required between the pump body and cover ?

    Thanks

    George

GM never used a gasket between the oil pump and main cap. I usually use a very light smear of RTV at this interface, so I don't think using a thin gasket would be a bad idea.

Addendum: as I re-read your post, I see you are talking about a gasket between the pump body and the cover. GM never used a gasket there, either. I would not recommend using a gasket at this interface. The impeller-to-cover clearance is a critical one for proper pump operation. The gasket might disturb this so I would not use it. Also, if there is ANY wear on the impeller or cover, I'd always recommend replacing the pump.

Thanks Joe for the reply. I don't think I was very clear in my description. The gasket I am refering to would fit between the pump housing and the cover that holds the oil pump gears in place.
