    Midyear Windshield Repos

I searched the Archives and found most info to be over a year old. There were suggestions for OEM, PPG Vintage, Denny(?) and Auto City. My windshield (67 coupe) is tinted according to the build sheet (is that entire tint or just the band?). I'm looking for the most correct dated and tinted one I can get. I'm getting nowhere with used and I don't want to replace my replacement with another replacement. I have to replace the rubber and polish the SS trim anyway. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I purchased all new glass for my 67 coupe from AutoCity Glass All glass was date coded and received full credit. The windshield is tinted across the top. The remainder is clear. Repop windshields are not correct tinting. Color is different and the stripe is also different from original.

Steve; no deducts with repro tinted windshields?

        Steve,

Given your comment about the incorrect tinting of repro windshields, how did you wind up getting no deducts during judging? Was the judging done by a Master judge?

Or was the windshield you purchased a used original GM item?

The car was built in early April 67, the side glass is now AA and JA (I don't remember which one is driver side).
          Thanks Bill!

To my knowledge no one has the correct banding. All the vendors you mention buy their glass from someone else, probably Pilkington as the bought PPG glass

              Hi Jim and Gail,

I was just researching this recently, and found many suppliers, with a wide range of prices, and for each distributor that had a few good comments about the windshield glass, it seemed there were also a few who were unhappy with the product for one reason or another. Then I found one of John Hinckley's posts, where he said that "
L-O-F was acquired by Pilkington years ago, and the Pilkington Vintage Division still has the master patterns."

So I searched out Pilkington Vintage, here’s the link to their web page. I haven't contacted them yet, but it looks like it's worth checking into. I don't know if their glass is different from the other vendors or if it all comes from the same manufacturer, but for what it's worth, Pilkington has the GM Restoration Parts, Soft-Ray and LOF logos, and say "We are also the only Officially Licensed GM Restoration Parts Distributor for glass products and the GM Soft-Ray logo.":

              Pilkington Classics:
"When you order from Pilkington Classics, you can enjoy the added benefit of having your glass replacement parts sandblasted with the original LOF logo and date coding. The process is simple: Give us your LOF logo requirements, and we'll do the rest.We are also the only Officially Licensed GM Restoration Parts Distributor for glass products and the GM Soft-Ray logo."

                Thanks Scott:
I appreciate the info. and will try to contact them today.
Can someone educate me on thintying and banding? I know what they but how do they occur? non tinted has no band or ALL have the band? and tinted does have it too?
                Thanks!

                  Jim,

The lack of correct replacement windshelds is why I did reasherch and found the glass polishing system I am working with in the "Glass Polishing" thread.

                    Re: Midyear Windshield Repos

Yea, polishing a replacement windshield doesn't make sense to me as I can get a new replacement for $125-150. If I didn't need to replace the gasket and polish the trim, I would just live with the old replacement glass, but to take it that far apart and not go for a "correct" reproduction or even a correct used original seems like an opportunity lost.

I got a quote from Pilkington for tinted/banded and dated for 285 plus 50 for date code then 100 for shipping. I may go for it.

Earlier this year I saw a new windshield in a mid-year and it was etched "Pilkington", so make sure you get the right etching when ordering.

Anyone have an idea what points you lose for having a clear windshield when it's supposed to be tinted? Better question is do I really want a clear windshield for driving purposes???

I wouldn't go the clear glass route. JMHO.

If all the other glass is clear then a clear windshield would not be questioned. Other than an authentic tank sticker, or A/C, there is nothing that would indicate a tinted windshield came with the car.

I have a repo tinted windshield in my coupe. The manufacturer name is on the edge and under the rubber gasket so it is not visible.
