    1960 Speedometer parts source.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a place that sells speedometer parts for a 60?

I took mine apart to repair it and found the small plastic gear for the odometer damaged so I'll have to find one some place.

The other thing I was wondering about is if the actual speedometer/odometer mechanism is the same as other GM cars of the era or is it Corvette specific?

Look in the driveline under Services, several people do instrument repair. They would be your best bet.

      Thanks Terry, I'll try that.

Does anyone know though, whether or not the actual speedometer/odometer mechanism is the same as other GM cars of the era or is it Corvette specific?

I have a Chevrolet 1929 to 1959 Car & Truck parts book which may give some clues. I'll do some research in the morning to see if anything matches. Occasionally I see some items for sale online. Last year I bought a nos speedo/tach bell cup in the box for a 62 tachometer I'm going to repair. I'll see if the part# matches to any pass cars and let you know.

Greg....no luck. Minimal parts info. I guess Delco made all that stuff. However, I forgot I had a AC Delco 56-67 Speedometer Parts List & Repair document. It may help your research. It's 90 pages with part#'s and repair information. It's a pdf file, about 4meg. Drop me a email and I'd send it to you. richmz(at)comcast(dot)net

ps the 1536996 speedo/tach cup pictured was found last year on ebay. My 62 original tach has a broken spring. Very sparse supply of parts out there, and repair shops don't want to sell individual parts for obvious reasons. Maybe a donor speedo but those rare too, and $$$.

            Greg,

Sorry to rain on your parade but if that part is changed the odds of the calibration being the same is slim and none.

Replacing parts in the speedo or tach is easy but the instruments to check and calibrate the speedo or tach again would not be profitable to obtain for a one shot deal.

Do yourself a favor and pic a qualified professional to service your instruments.

Greg, sent it to Joe Ray, he can fix it, does them all the time. Scott

                Thanks again.

Actually all I'm looking for is this tiny white gear at the bottom of the pic(has a tooth missing). Everything else looks fine. The rotating magnet was a little tight so I lubed it up with some WD-40 and then light gun oil and now it spins freely.

I found that the odometer from a 72 GMC truck will fit and function in place of the 60 one so I'm thinking that this tiny white gear that I need should be the same as in other speedometers of the era.

                Maybe I'll get lucky....

                  Greg,

That little white gear usually strips because the odometer numbers are difficult to turn. They (the numbers) are available from any parts house. Yours are not original and may have been replaced because the old ones stripped the little white gear.

Ah, you read my mind Joe! I was thinking that the numbers seemed a "tad" stiff especially compared to the one I have from that GMC. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

How can you tell that they aren't original?

                      Greg,

Numbers aren't fat enough. They haven't been made in years that were 100% correct. Even the new repos are not exact but work fine.
