And one of my favorite MoPar racers, Chambersburg, PA's Bud Faubel and the "Hemi Honker". One of my best memories was Bud match racing an early Thunderbolt at Cecil County in late '63 with a Stage II, '63 A/FX Dodge (Jenkins tuned) and whipping it three straight races.

      Tom,
If you attend the nostalgia drags held annually on Fathers Day weekend at the strip in Bowling Green, you will see plenty of them. We were in BG in June the week prior to the drags to pick up our car and a dragster was parked in fromt of our hotel all week. The frame on this dragster is of a type used by many racers. Short wheel base length was somehow associated with the circumfrence of the rear tires. I forget the name of the frame designer but he had at least two designs. I belive someone told me that the NHRA was not pleased with the front end design on the frame in the photos.

One of the guests at the hotel had a Stone Woods & Cook gasser in a trailer.

If I got lucky, photos are attached.

Petty put this Barracuda into the crowd in the Atlanta area totally destroying it and killing a number of people. I think it may have been the last of his short lived drag racing career.

I visited that Dragstrip in 1962 when stationed at Ft. Belvoir. We would go out each weekend to a different strip to watch the action. I like some of those strips out there as there were many that were kind of dug out between the hills and had shutoff sections going up hill. Then too, the sounds were great in the hills - didn't bother any farmers like our old strips in the flat midwest.

I raced Detroit in either 60 or 61, and it was just like noted - lots of factory connected teams and individuals. Got my butt kicked in the first round.

Thanks for posting Charlie. Lots of old memories.

My brother-in-law use to run at this place & he said it was located on what is now Starky Rd. in Roanoke County just off Rt.419.

Curtis "Pops" Turner in the first, Glen Wood in #2, and probably since it is a VA tag on that car, some of Franklin County VA's finest

Yup, you got it. I went to high school with Turner's son.

That's Leonard on the right next to Glen. My dad drove me past thier shop in the 60's. It was in Sterling, VA, on the edge of Town. It was a small garage, nothing like the Taj Mahals' today's race teams have.

It's interesting that you knew the haul was from Franklin County, the capitol of VA's shine effort. There's quite a history in your area with Junior and some others.
