    C-1 Horn rebuilding

I see where Zip Products sells a horn rebuilding kit for early Corvettes for about $16. Have any of you rebuilt horns with such a kit? One of my original 1957 horns has a muffled sound. Sending them in for someone else to do is rather expensive. I just wondered it I should tackle it myself with one of these rebuild kits.

Art, in May of this year I looked into getting the horns for my '56 rebuilt. I was immediately given Ron's name. I called and talked to him. He is a really nice fellow to talk to. Unfortunately he told me that he did not work on horns as far back as mine. He referred me to Joe Perri who is in the Chicago area. His phone number is 312-307-1977. I talked to Joe and he was very knowledgeable about vintage auto horns. His rebuilding service was not cheap at I believe $250 for the set of horns. Unfortunately right after I spoke with him I was sick with bronchitis and sinus problems for over a month and did not get my horns sent off. By the time I was well my car came home from body work and I have been busy with the body and frame ever since. I really can't say anything about Joe's work other than he was recommended by Ron. Whatever you do, I wish you good luck with your horns and also with your restoration. Brooks Glover (2141)

The repair kit from Zip is different from their deluxe kit available in the past. The deluxe kit came with metal diaphragms. If your diaphragm is badly rusted the $16 kit isn't enough. For some reason they no longer carry the deluxe kit for C1's, although they do for C2's.

I used Dennis Portka (716)649-0921 with good results.

He still restores C1 horns and also has good used cores if you send him an unrestorable one.

I have used both Joe Perri and Dennis Portka with great results. The repair kits are not recommended by me, I tried and they just don't work the same when finished. I think the diaphrams are too thick.
