Hey David I'm a real big fan of the Cobras and always wanted to build one but never had the garage space. I now have the space but need to rebuild 2 motors and do a body off towards the end of next year so the Cobra will have to be after that maybe. Stewy

Jack I sometimes wish I had a 5 or 6 speed but to think of getting rid of the T 10 and sexy shifter assembly would break my heart. I feel it's kind of part of the car. Stewy

If I do my calculations correctly it returns on average about 15.2 miles per gallon Stewy

I would like to be burning gas right now, instead of sitting in front of a fire, snow on the ground, low 20's outside, snow predicted later.

Tomorrow, I take off all the chrome , emblems , handles , put out the carpets, seats, door panels, everything I put back on, waiting for the painter to get over his hernia.

Well Jan 1 , the car goes into the shop. I guess I am going to have to think twice before a drive in the snow again, well at least once, before I convince myself that the roads aren't that bad, and the salt won't hurt.

I am getting ready for bed, are you just getting up, no wait, its summer time for you. Now I am really depressed. Enjoy your summer.

Jack it's around 1 30 pm and it's a cracker of a day out there. Around 85 and very clear. It would be a nice day for the roof off but I have it on due to the full day of rain yesterday. I hope your painter gets fit. Sounds like you will have another shiny car soon. Good luck with it all !! Stewy

Hey Stewy, my Cobra is an absolute blast. It is extremely fast. Have you heard of the Dragon's Tail in Tenn? Another twisty/curvy/snakey road in Tenn. Google the Dragon's Tail.

I just rode it on you tube on the back of a bike ! WOW that dragon tail is some stretch of winding road. What I did notice was all the bikers and cars getting along there. Is it always that busy it would kill the momentum in a nice new ZR1.
It's great to have a nice piece of road like that in your home town. I live in the City and it's dreadful for a good cruise. I have actually found a new commercial estate that has a 1/4 mile track into the buildings. It's 4 lane wide with full lines down each side and plenty of run off before a cross road. I gave it a blast last week at night and I was dribbling by the time I got to the end of it. Freshly backed tar and it's as flat as a table top (sh.t carters hat) Aussie saying.
I will evaluate on my Aussie slang. We never used to have a suer. So our toilets were outside in a box connected to the fence and the waste man would drive along and pull the tin with the human waste in it and put it on his head or hat and walk to his waste truck and dump it in there. Hence his hat was very flat carrying the human excrement. Hence the saying as flat as a sh.t carters hat. Stewy

Stewy, I put over 4 thousand miles on my 63 Fuely coupe from April 24 till October this year. It is all pretty well sorted out and I get 22 mpg on the highway most of the time with a 3:36 rear ratio. Next summer will put more miles on it as I just finished it this year after 21 years of storage. Nothing beats driving them as I drove it 80000 miles with no paint on it in the 80's. I plan on another 80000 miles with paint for comparison. Paul

Back in the mid/late 60s, my 54 vette with 327/1963 FI would make right around 15mpg and gas was 32 cents/gal or so! So what I am seeing on this thread seems to fit in. Paul, 22mpg sounds really good. That must be interstate type driving as you say. -Dan-

You have me beat. I put 2600 miles in the last 6 months on my 1953 #276 car. The side curtain for the driver's side doesn't like my hard top (or soft top), however, so the 53 will probably see fewer miles for the next few months.

The engine rebuild on my 59 car is just about complete. The 59 has real windows, so i can see driving the 59 more during the winter. I might hit 6000 miles a year split between the 53 and 59 going forward.

Drive that car Russ. Just having the car on the road, and people seeing that these cars can really be driven, with keep the legend alive and well.
However, I do appreciate the ability we have of making a ride in 50's and 60's technology seem like fun. And it is. We have to drive the car, the car does not drive us. We are anachronisms.

Every time I start and drive my 55 it's a pleasure to drive . Smooth, no noise, handles great ,has rarely let me down with over 117,000 mile on the original engine , people always cant believe I drive it (top flight) bubble top fits great with the side windows and plasticon top , soft top so so .I get more pleasure having and talking with people then any car show. 15mpg, I've had many Corvettes but the 55 is so sweet to drive and cant understand way some other C1's don't drive as well.

It is highway driving but some of it is mountain driving. The injector has been calibrated by a Kent Moore Manometer. That took the mileage from 16-17 mpg to the low twentys. I run maximum air in the tires on road trips and make sure the air filter is clean and fresh. I get as good going 80 MPH as I do at 70MPH which seem odd to me but I like that. They sure are a joy to drive. Paul

Nice driving Stewart. You've definitely got me beat on the miles per year. I like to drive my car as often as possible, and I actually do keep track of EVERY mile I drive by recording them in a little log book after every ride. I also keep track of any repairs, adjustments, fuel costs, etc. To date, I'm averaging about 1,200 miles per year. I live in the Chicago, Illinois, area, so my car sits a lot between November and the following March (about five months per year). If I do get a sunny, dry day during those months, I'll still try to get it out for a ride once in a while. The latest I'd ever got it out was December 30th a couple years ago. I've never had it out in January or February. The weather is usually really bad during those months, plus there's a lot of salt on the roads. Even still, if I was driving it year round, I don't think I could match your total mileage for one year. I love seeing old Corvettes on the road. Good job.

If I'm careful I plan on doing the same in 2010. I will then be taking her apart for a pretty up. Then the cotton balls start and maybe time for another new interesting ride. Mid year Corvette ? I'll see. Stewy
