Re: The strangest thing you found while restoring your car

Found a 1965 penny (car is a 67) and 3-5 very small yellow beads from a broken necklace/bracelet under the carpet when I replaced it this past spring. Returned the penny to a safe place under the carpet when I installed the new underlayment and carpet - seemed to me that I shouldn't mess with "the lucky penny" I found in my car The beads are in a small plastic bag in storage with other "original" things from the car.

My buddy and I, while stationed at White Sands, NM in 1963, did a fair amount of travel around the southwest in my 63 Vette. He had a telescopic sight that he mounted on sort of a wooden holder similar to a rifle stock with a handle grip for each hand. That allowed you to hold it real steady when you looked through it. He made the thing himself and we found it came in handy out in the mountains and deserts. We didn't have any binoculars or even telephoto lenses on our cheap brownie cameras. He had left it in the car in the storage area behind the seats and we forgot about it until I rediscovered it during some rehab work I was doing on the car in the mid 70's. I still have it today, even though he passed away in 1976. I seldom use it, but I have it and everytime I see it it brings back a lot of pleasant memories such as of the Grand Canyon, Petrified Forest and many others.

Besides the silver coins in the interior, I found a 8 X 11 sheet of yellowish paper stuck to the right side of my gas tank neck. The paper was completely blank. My car is a 1966 and I know they did not have tank stickers hence the strange find.

While doing the interior restoration on my 65 coupe, I discovered the following etched into the radio casing....... Raymond Leban, 300 Palo Verdes Redondo, 17375S10752, 4-19-65. It appears to me that the original owner, whom I am assuming to be Raymond Leban at the indicated address, had trouble with the radio when the car was three months old and under warranty. He returned the car to the dealer who removed it and etched the owner and vehicle information on to the radio casing before sending it to a repair facility. So far, no luck locating that Mr. Leban despite a number of searches. Still hoping

While repairing the heater defroster in my 66, I found what was blocking the door so it did not blow the air where it should. A like new Zippo lighter! I guess it got tossed up on the dash and went right down the defroster vent. No, it didn't light, but it did after I filled it! I gave it to a buddy that smoked and I think he still uses it today!!!

In the storage compartment in the driver's door of a 54 I had: A court restraining order against the previous owner of the car, obtained by his girlfriend.

That's the date the panel was molded by General Tire & Rubber ("GenCorp" Division); they bought the huge A.O. Smith-Ionia fiberglass molding plant in late 1970.

After disassembling the speedo from my 58 I discovered the following written in pencil just above the odometer on the inside/backside in the green area "30006 Jullian 7-24-62" Somebody disassembled the speedo fairly early in it's life. 30006 miles after 4 yrs isn't too bad.

A Disneyland map dated 1966 in my 66. Maybe it really is a California car!

I found several 1972 dated quarters uner the front carpet.

I found the front cover page to a Sears grand opening flyer under the halo panel of my 66, dated dec 66, with the address only of the orig. owner, found him one year later, you get lucky sometimes. Phil 8063 Found a two bar spinner under the passenger seat of a 63 I bought.

on a 57 hd brake car I owned in the late 80's the round front air ducts located at the corners of the front firewall/rocker panels were full of dirt. As I cleaned the dirt out on the rh side I pulled out an old steak knife and a empty beer can in addition to a huge amount of clodded up dirt.
