    66 console color

    Hey All
What would be the correct black to use on the shifter console plate?

I like to use SEM 39143 trim black. It should give you the semi gloss that is correct. You can get it in pints, qts, or spray cans at any good auto paint store.
    Good luck.

Going back to the original Sept-Oct 1965 publications by Chevrolet News; for Corvette Refinish Paint Charts, low gloss (3 degrees) was used on "Linkage Cover Panel Inner".

I don't know if this is Dupont's way of describing the shift console (as we in the hobby refer to it), or as the GM Corvette parts catalog describes it: Gr 4.017 PLATE, transmission gearshift hand lever (floor mounted); then in more detail for the specific C2 console: plate, lever and ash tray trim (note: it may be necessary to paint to match). So if the "console" is really the "linkage cover, inner", then the following black formulas would apply.

Ditzler DL-9292, or Dupont 4466-L. So if you can find someone to duplicate those, you should be OK. Same blacks for 1965 or '66.

Read someplace that the console was finished in a dye? Believe some of the repo vendors have it, try Quantra?

          Alan -

No original console plates were finished with a "dye"; they were finished with real paint. "Dye" was invented by the restoration community for application on vinyl and plastics.

Further, "dye" is nothing more than extremely thinned paint. Want "dye"? Make your own.
