the c-1(and i'd guess the c-2 and c-3) frames wall thickness is 3/32" thick. numerous brackets(fuel line and brake line brackets to mention a few) are fastened to the frame with self tapping fine thread bolts. oftentimes , the threads in the frame enlarge due to rust or bubba or incorrect replacement fastners. one solution is to weld the holes shut and re-drill. that's a PIA when you discover the hole enlargements, AFTER you've painted the frame. years ago, i built a 57 chevy pickup using a fiberglass cab and doors and front clip. there were times in the pickup's construction where the use of a bolt with nut were physically impossible to mate the nut on the bolt.i bought this handy-dandy tool know as The Nutter. its available from Creative Engineering, 475 miles standish blvd, taunton, mass 02780. the tool installs what is referred to as Rivet-Nut Insta-Thread. one person, working from one side, can swiftly secure blind threaded fastners.what ya do is drill the corvette frame's hole with a specific drill bit, depending on what size bolt you have to use. for instance, if your bracket uses a 1/4" bolt, ya drill the hole with a 25/64 bit, insert the Insta-thread, then using the Nutter tool, the insta-thread is expanded on the unexposed wall of the corvette frame.once the fuel line bracket is installed , all evidence of the Insta-thread is hidden from those sneaky judges eyes. The insta-threads are available to accomodate nut sizes from 6-32 up to 3/8-16. mike

Re: neat tool
Rich, two very important chemicals on my work bench. NeverSeize and three different grades of Loctite. Another handy product is Loctite Thread Repair. I repaired the stripped fuel line threads in the Quadrajunk on the madam's Corvette almost twenty years ago. Still holding. Add Loctite PST (pipe sealant w/teflon) and there is not much you cannot fix.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: neat tool
Mike,
This is a picture of the rivnut I used on my 63 frame. Sounds like the same thing and so far has worked very well.
The next one I install, I am going to use a length of thread with a nut to pull the assembly together as opposed to using a bolt because that tends to turn everything and can be difficult to get started..

Re: neat tool
you can get rivnuts with a splined O.D. to help hold the rivit in the hole from turning.....In another life we punched an hexagonal hole in the sheet metal and used a hexagon rivit.....they make an air tool with a threaded nose that pulls the rivit tight....Thanks Mike for jogging the memory.- Top

Re: neat tool
They also have the inserts with a key/tab, that you file a little notch into your hole to reduce the insert turning. These work real nice. We have one of the air tools to set these at work, and they work real sweet, with more consistency over the hand tools.NCRS New England Chapter Chairman 2022, 2024
