    70 Starter

    Just bought my 70 L46 4spd. Has a bad non-original flywheel with sheered teeth, and a high torque small Delco replacement starter.

    Previous owner gave me the original flywheel for the car. I put the original flywheel back in, and bought a rebuilt Auto Zone starter for a 350 4 spd Vette. Tried to start it, and it sounded like it was going to self destruct.

    Next step is to use some Locktite "Prussian Blue" to mark the contact points of the starter gear and the flywheel teeth so that I can shim it.

    I went to Paragon website to buy original style starter bolts, and realized that their bolt set includes a long bolt, and a shorter one. The rebuilt starter I have on the car takes 2 long bolts. I'm thinking that the starter I got from Autozone is the wrong style, (if the bolt kit from Paragon is correct.)

    Can you guys point me in the right direction? Thanks.

    As I remember both my bolts for my 1971 were long and the same length. My engine is the LT-1 and a 1971. Acording to my restoration guide both the 1970 350/350 and the early 1971 LT-1 had the same starter #1108338. If I'm wrong someone will correct me.

      The correct starter for your application should have a CAST IRON nose. It should use 2 bolts for attachment to the block and both bolts should be of length 3-5/8".

      If you have anything other than the above, it's not what you need. If you have the above, it should work, assuming that you have the correct flywheel and bellhousing.

          I assume that 1970 Corvettes with 350/300 with turbo 400 used different starters. My 70's original starter is #1108430 OF 17 2 and has a aluminum nose.

            The correct starter for a 1970 350 automatic is 1108430. Mine is cast iron and another number so I can't tell you what it looked like only the correct number.

              My restoration guide states "automatic trans-equipped cars utilize starters with aluminum noses and manual trans have cast iron".

                Yes, for the 1970 with THM-400 an aluminum nose is correct. This is an aluminum nose with staggered bolt pattern and using 2 bolts of 4-5/8" length. It is NOT the same as the nose which has a "straight-across" bolt pattern and using a long and short mounting bolts.
