good friend, who is restoring a 62 FI Vette(ex-Les Bieri 62) , brought the rear springs to my shop the other day. he wanted help installing new rubbers and bands as i have the tool. anyway, he walks in with the pair of rears. instead of just three rubber/bands per spring assembly, these puppys had five rubber/bands per spring assembly. the bands had the "original" scratch markings on their exposed surfaces(unlike repo banding stainless straps from CC) and the cap or seal was the correct Signoid mfgr logo stamped in the caps/seals. hence, i conclude they have their original rubbers/bands. besides the 5 vs 3 straps, these springs have no cut-out on the sides of the leaves to accomidate the bands(like original non-rpo c-1 spring leaves) .the leaves had the depressed stamping on their undersides like any original c-1 leaves i've ever examined.instead of 4 leaves per spring asembly, these pups have 5 leaves. On the smallest leaf, the part # stamping reads 3748143 and other stamping reads GM337E8. i recall Les Bieri buying a heavy duty brake set-up about 20 years ago and i think the brake package came off a 58 RPO vette. my guess these interesting springs belonging to my friend were also on the car that supplied Les with the RPO brake setup. Whatcha thingk guys?mike

Re: Interesting c-1 rear springs
As usual, when not in the grip of the Beast, our fearless detective doctor provided the answer to his own riddle - Mar 58 parts book in Gr. 7.503 as 5 leaf springs for 57-8 Corvette with HD Suspension. I wonder if the E8 in the other # could be May 1958?- Top

Re: Interesting c-1 rear springs
Not likely--the E indicated Eaton Spring company. All springs through 62 had the E between the Julian date and the single-digit code for the year.- Top
