    69 shift boot

I just received a new 4 speed shift boot and starting to think about the best way to install. It looks to me, that in addition to taking the console apart, the "T" handle must go as well to get the new boot over the shift lever. Is that correct?

The T-handle is easy to remove. Just remove the shifter ball to remove it and pull it up, don't loose the spring.
If the lower boot/seal is old, it also might need replacing.

Jim, you are correct, just be careful with the fiber opitic,s. The cross over brace on front of console, the nuts can be a pain to remove use a flexable socket to ease the removel. if you have the vent cables its a pain to un-hook, A/C cars maybe alittle easier. lastly once your ready for the fiber opitics remove the two phillips head screws on the console, instead of unhooking, that way may break the fiber opitics, lift the rear part of console to access the small phillips screws.

Ed I don't know which Jim you are referring to -- But Jim T has the right steps. I have replaced the shift boot on a 1969, and a 1971 without removing the console.

Yes, all you need is a "stubby" phillips head screwdriver or 1/4" drive ratchet with phillips head driver.

I agree, as long as we're talking about the "upper" shift boot. Trim plate would probably have to come off to replace the lower boot.

If someone can get the lower boot off without first removing the trim plate I'd be TOTALLY FLABBERGASTED!

By the way, for those that are unaware, the lower boot is really the important one. It's the one that seals out the weather and, more importantly, any fumes. The upper boot is pretty much "secondary" and, mostly, ornamental. Any fumes getting by the lower boot will enter the car even if the upper boot actually seals well.

I agree with the above posts. All you need tool wise is a phillips screw driver. It is an easy job. Tom

The lower boot can be a bit of a PITA. The 6 hex head screws hold the top plate down, but you need to engage the two clips on the underside, inside the transmission tunnel.
