This is my first post & I would like to say hello to all the NCRS members. I am the original owner of a 1970 Coupe 350/350 with original starter. Starter number is 1108418 with date OG3. This starter shows as a 1972 in the judging manual. Is it possible that Duane Dunlap could have a different starter number and not the one he refers to? Am I the only one that has a different number than the judging manual or are there others? Thanks!

The 1108418 was in the GM parts bin and was available for usage during the 1970 model year. In fact, although it's not shown in the 1970-72 JG, it does appear in the NCRS Corvette Specification Guide as "unconfirmed". It also is shown in other references I have as being used for the 1970 model year.

The date on your starter pretty much confirms that it's original to your car AND confirms that the 1108418 was used for the 1970 model year. So, I'd say its use for the 1970 model year now goes from "unconfirmed" to "confirmed".

The 1108418 was a high torque starter. The more common 1970 small block starter, GM #1108338, was a standard torque starter.

The thing I can't figure out is why the 1108418 even existed, at all. I can't see any functional or component difference from the 1108400 which was also used for 1970 high torque applications.

I can tell you, for certain, that John and his father do this sort of work professionally and can certainly do what you want to get done. Their work is the standard of the restoration industry, plain and simple.

Duane, "DITTO" Joe's comments. I have two of the Pirkle starter restorations. The starters were original to my cars and perform and look great. You can't go wrong with them. They also do generators and alternators.

It is possible to open a big can of worms with this.The 8338 was originaly equipped with low(standard) torque fields. It can be RE-built with Low torque fields high torque fields OR conversion fields.The conversion fields let you use a high torque armature with a set of fields that exit thru the standard field lead opening.A set of high torque fields can be modified to exit thru the standard torque opening as well(Dad and I have built all our standard torque starters with HT armatures and fields for the last 10 years) We did'nt invent the technique,the rebuild industry has done for years. I bring this up because a sharp chassis judge will spot the field lead hole in the wrong spot and possibly make a deduct.You have options to prevent this from happening and save the hassle of cutting an extra hole (and filling the extra hole)

Thanks to everyone for responding. Today, I ordered a Pirkle Hi-torque starter. George, you may want to ask the Pirkles your question concerning the 1108418 starter. They are very knowledgeable and are NCRS judges.
