Im still not sure how to get my steering colume out. Is the seal plate at the steering wheel mount? Any help to get this thing out would be greatly appreciated. I have a restored one ready to take its place and I think I can slide that one in at body drop. I need to get this one out with the body on. Thanks folks!!!

To get the steering column out with the body on-not advised but can be done-the driver inner fender well needs to be out-the radiator and support need to be out-along with carbs/intake manifold-then you can rotate the column and slide it out the bottom. As Roy sez wait for the body to come off if possible.

Re: steering colume seal plate?
I just pulled the original column out of my 56 with the body on. The engine and radiator were out of the car. I also had to remove the driver's side engine mount. Got the column out with the pitman arm attached.
Replaced it with a column from a 60 (for more room). Just reversed the procedure.
Wasn't a big deal, but you have to be careful about the dash fiberglass. Have a helper keeping an eye on that for you.- Top

Re: steering colume seal plate?
Thanks Ed, Don't know if I am going to do it yet, but I would like to. It just means I have to wait until spring to do it. Can't paint in NY winters (15 degrees out right now). I was hoping to get the engine back in it before then. -Dan-- Top

Re: steering colume seal plate?
53,54,55 firewalls do not have a hole cover like the 56-57. So the Hole is just big enough to fit the steering column through. No additional space to allow you to shift the column side to side or up and down. So the unit has to come out straight in line with the dash hole and firewall hole.
If you heat the cast iron steering box at the top where the sheet metal steering shaft cover goes in you can pull the sheetmetal tube out. This will give you some room in the dash and firewall holes to move the steeting column about and get it out much easier, but still not easy.- Top
