Warranty repair question - can I get the original part back ?

I was wondering if I had a repair on a C6 under warranty is it possible to get to keep the part that was replaced.

If GM keeps them then do they toss them or analyze for failure ?

I am curious because my C6 will probably get a new clutch master cylinder or slave cylinder tomorrow under warranty. I would like to keep the original dated/numbered parts for the car.

What did they do in the C1 and C2 era ?

Most likely the parts will have to go back. If the General does not call for them, you could probably get them.

      Mark,

I asked for - and received back - the top handles for my 08 that were replaced under warranty. The catch was that if the dealer found out GM wanted them back for analysis I'd have to ship them to him.

GM never asked for them back.

Re: Warranty repair question - can I get the original part back ?

Thanks Tom and Patrick. Now I know I can ask without feeling like an idiot.

Patrick - how do you like your 2008 ? I just picked up a 15K Mile Atomic Orange 2008 Z06 and really like it. I have only driven C1's and C2's so this is a big change. The power was way more than I expected.

How accurate are the tire pressure readings from the dash ? Mine seem to be reading a few pounds light from the gauge on my air compressor hose. I pumped them to 42 PSI and the sensor reads 39 PSI. The max on the tire is 44 PSI. Does yours ever read higher than 39 PSI ? I just read that 39 PSI could be the upper limit of the sensor. Does that make sense ?

Is it pretty normal to have to crack a door to more easily shut the hatch window ?

        Thanks,

        Mark

          Mark,

The accuracy of the TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) depends on the altitude where you live. if you live at or close to sea level it should be quite accurate. Since the entire sensor is inside the tire there is no way for the sensor to compensate for altitude. Mose inaccuracies are reported by people who live at altitude.

I use an Acu-gage, and have used them for years. The manufacturer is in the Chicago suburbs and I get my gauges (I have one in each of my cars) re-calibrated whenever I go by the factory. I have established a friendship with the founder of the company who is now retired, but comes in to work several days a week. I make a point of stopping in when he is there and we have a nice chat, some coffee, and he checks my gauges and rec-calibrates them as needed. He often comments on the one I have in the 1970 that I bought in 1969. He can tell it is an old one.

Yes, it is normal to have to open the door, or lower the window to close the hatch.

Mark, in late '76 or early '77 the horn button on my '77 was recalleddue to potential glare. I spoke with the dealer, a friend, after I received my recall letter, and he told me the button must be turned in/exchangedfor a painted one. My letter was written off as no response received from the customer (me)and I kept the original which is on the car now.

My wife has an HHR and the tire pressure monitor reads different than 4 of my gauges. All of my gauges read the same.

I just ordered a couple of the Accu-gages. I will then have a accurate gauge to compare with.

Glad you kept your horn button. Probably most wouldn't have thought that way back then.

the recommended pressure is 30# cold. if the readout goes over 40# a warning will show up on the dash. yes on the hatch

The requirement is for the dealer to hold the parts for review at the dealership or shipment for analysis for fifteen days after the warranty claim is paid by GM. After that the parts are usually scrapped by the dealer.

My tires say the pressure is 44 PSI. At 27 PSI the low tire warning comes on.

                    Are Z06 tires different ?

I'm "kinda" anal, kept all the documentation, window sticker, battery, spark plug, shipper docs., etc. 'same with the '78. Then I got married and I only have the memories.

Don't the Z06's have automatic hatch closing mechanisms like my coupe?

they do not have it to save weight just like no power seat on the passenger side

44# is the max pressure to get the weight rating. check on the inside edge of you drivers door jam for the correct recommended pressure
