With Detroit in the top five nationwide for foreclosures and home values having tanked, anything in this area is a steal at current prices; most home values are down 25%-40% vs. three years ago, regardless of location.- Top

Re: Duntov's house is for sale
Ok guys, Isn't anyone going to say something about a 3 bedroom house with only 1 full bath????
Noting that I am the only one who brought this issue out into the open I'm guessing that it has something to do with the difference between the "X" and the "Y" chromosome.

The house was built in 1938. In those days LOTS of 3 bedroom homes only had 1 full bath. In fact, I suspect that even the 1/2 bath was added to the house somewhere along the way.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Duntov's house is for sale
Wow, we are talking about a 1938 house that was renovated 1 time since the build date. I would love to be in the area of the home and take a glance thru it. It should be a blast back in time if this is correct.

Would a half bath in modern times be called a powder room ? Maybe that's what they mean. A small downstairs bathroom ? Stewy- Top

Re: Duntov's house is for sale
The house where I grew up in Seattle's Magnolia Bluff section was built in 1927 - about 2000 sq. ft. three bedrooms and "one-and-a-half baths", but somehow mom and dad and two kids survived having only one bathtub with a shower head. The style was English Tudor, stucco, but it was really concrete - not like the stucco in Southern California that absorbs water and can't handle freezing.
The twenties were a boom time in Seattle, and this was a fairly upmarket home for the time and area.
Not long after we moved in circa 1951 my mother had the exterior painted pink and over the decades it became a neighborhood icon known as "The Pink House". In the eighties my mother reported that buses stopped outside the house, and all the Japanese tourists got out and took pictures, and Washington Mutual used a photo of the house in a print ad campaign.
Circa 1956 we had a family room added that required knocking out about a 7 x 12 foot section of outside wall in the dining room. It took two guys two days to knock through the outside stucco and interior lathe and plaster walls. They quipped that the house would survive an atomic bomb.
Back then the studs went from the footing all the way to the top of the two stories and they are virtually knot free - all cut from big, old growth trees, and I don't recall any wood rot problems like I'm having on my circa 1974-built California home.
As the old saying goes - they don't build 'em like that anymore. I'd be willing to bet that both my parent's house and Zora's house will still be standing when mine is torn down and replaced.
When I sold the Seattle house in 1993 is was still essentially all original includilng the oak framed leaded pane windows on both the outside walls and built in oak cabinetry, and the couple that bought it planned on restoring the original woodwork and windows - not replacing them with modern designs in order to maintain the house's original 1920's charm. Oh, and it's still pink, though a slightly tamer shade than the "day-glo" pink the last time my parents had it repainted in the eighties, which is what probably caused its increased notoriety.
It sounds like Zora's old house is also very original and hopefully the new owner will choose restoration rather than "modernization" as we do with our vintage Corvettes.
It would be a great subject for a "This Old House" series given its history.
