    Re: Wheels

    Dan,

i just went throught the riveted vs. welded wheel for the 1960 car. I agree, it sounds a bit confusing. My judging manual says my wheels should be welded...it doesn't say anything about the welding technique or mention dog bones. Interestingly, I found numerous fusion welded (no dog bones) and numerous riveted 15x5 wheels in my boneyard hunt yesterday, but, passed them by to find the dog bone set that I now have.

      Re: Wheels

Hi again Jim. I have not had the impression about going from judging to driver, but I have not thought about it either. Anyhow, the riveted/ welded is one part that I think I do understand. All wheels up to mid 1956 were riveted. For model year 1956 Chevrolet, and probably most manufacturers, went to tubeless tires and found they were getting air leaks around the rivets, so they switched to welded.
While I have owned C1 Corvettes for 49 years, this is my first attempt at any type of restoration. So I am new to it also. Good luck with your 58. This is a fun hobby and can be very rewarding. But like most hobbies it is also very time consuming, expensive, and very involved. There is just so much to learn, but that is one of the parts that I find most rewarding. -Dan-

The 53-55 JM now states 55 wheels were welded , I believe the late 55 #400 up? but what number is still up for discussion , 1955 saw the first tubeless tire

I apologize gentleman for being a dumb ass, but what exactly is a "dog bone"?

Take a look at the photo in the link below. You will be able to see the cutout in the shape of a dogbone. The wheels without the dogbone are solid in this area.

            Regards,

Checked mine and I have one "dog bone" wheel with the double step up front so I guess that will be my spare. The rest are rivited.
