    C2 Vent Window Mechanisms

I would like to know if there is a difference for the Vent Window Mechanisms between Coupe and Conv, specifically for 67 should there be any difference year over year. I see Trim Parts advertises a unit for Conv. and would like to know if it will fit the coupe.

Has anyone had experience with any aftermarket unit meeting PV specificatons ? I believe my originals have a bit too much play in them to meet PV specs and would like to try and repair if possible. Are there any articles available on reducing or removing the play in these units ?

    Thanks for your comments

    Howard,
As far as I know the shaft length (where the crank attaches) is different between Coupe and Convertible. It seems that the repro regulators are not quite up to par for PV. I started rebuilding the originals. It is important that the shaft has close to zero play against the end plate. Sometimes the center hole in the end plate (where the shaft protrudes) is worn out and causes play.
    Hope this helps.

Crack open your copy of th e'67 AIM and flip to UPC 1, Sheet K3. The coupe vent regulators are called out as PN's 3824301-2.

Now navigate to UPC 1, Sheet K14. The convertible vent regulator are called out as PN's 9704600-1.

        Howard;

I would look very closely at any reproduction vent window regulators... particularly if you are PV bound.. I bought two for my 1965 from a very well know supplier of repo parts and they were basically garbage.. real garbage... I finally wound up having the originals rebuilt by America's Finest Corvettes out of California... Check with the rest of the folks on this board as they may have other recommendations for a rebuild.. Also, you are correct on the PV... they look for very little crank movement before the window moves.. the window needs to seal well against the rubber gasket, and you should have no more than 1/2" "wiggle" if the judge attempts to move the rear edge of the vent window glass front to back while the window is half way open. Needless to say, my repros failed miserably!!

        Good luck,

        Joel

Are you referring to units as new from GM back in 67 or worn ones as in used Corvettes today?

I have reworked and modified the mechanism on my cars so they pass the PV. They are now solid with no slop. I'm almost sure even brand new they were sloppy. Just from my experience with the parts and the design I can't see how they would not be sloppy. Tolerances and method of assembly just are not conducive to a solid, tight, and smooth operation. The gear centers are to loose and have excess backlash. Control of the centers is a hope and a prayer at best.

NCRS PV should not have requirements on this operation that exceed the original design capability.

Thank you all for your comments. I have ordered the reproductions as produced by Trim Parts and will look them over very closely. If they are not up to muster I will order replacement gears from Americas Finest and attempt to do a rebuild on my originals myself.

Although the originals do function fine my good friend Scott Sinclair feels they will be borderline for PV. It's easier to try and repair now while my door panels are still apart than pull them apart again later.

Does anyone know if there are more than one producer of the rebuild gear kits or are they all originating from Americas Finest ?

              Thanks again for your comments

              Howie

I have a hard time accepting the minimal amount of play allowed for the vent window cranks. I can concede that the drivers side vent window of of my 67 might have some wear but not the passenger side. On my car, the amount of play is similar on both sides. I have had the care since 68.
