I have a dipstick with a green dot button round with dimple. on the stick it says "USE SE ENGINE OIL". There is a part number of 3951576 with the letter "M" after it. What is the application for this dipstick and is it original or service replacement do you think?

Re: Dipstick "green Dot" W/dimple
Hello:
This came up on the Camaro Discussion Board; here is what it said:
The dip stick sold by GM under 3951576 with 3876870 tube will work for your 1971 Z28
The current GM 3951576 dip stick uses the green tip handle with the dimple and is the same length as the original green tip handle used
during assembly line production
Current stick is stamped with GM part number "3951576" and "USE SE ENGINE OIL" and has a dimple in the handle
1969-71 assembly line production dip sticks are stamped with "USE GM6040 M QUALITY MS OIL" without GM part number
and no dimple on the handle
The 3876870 tube remains the same with no changes

Re: Dipstick "green Dot" W/dimple
Larry, thanks for the post. I guess that this dipstick would be correct for any 69-71 chev camaro including Z-28 or would it only be used for Z-28 application?- Top

The GM #3951576 was used for a very large number of small block applications over the 1969-79 period---far too many to list here. It is also SERVICE for 1967-68 Chevelles with small block. As far as Corvettes go, it was used only for 1975-E76.
The dipstick you have sounds like an older SERVICE piece. I don't think that originals or original SERVICE pieces had the dimple. The version of the 3951576 available for the last 15 years, or so, has a yellow plastic handle. So, what you have is a lot closer to original configuration than what you can buy now.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The '69 Z/28 dipstick didn't have a plastic plug - just a flat rolled handle. Photos below of my original (02D Norwood car).- Top
