Certainly not in Michigan either. I do not of anywhere where they would allow that. Following up on some previous threads with the Michigan Secretary of State, they told me it was against the law here to re stamp engine pads.

listing gone! I do not know the circumstances on this listing but, if you had to remove the tag, you would not talk about it. The only case I can think of is a C-3 with severe rust in the left W/S postDick Whittington- Top

In the 60s, I had a friend that was a CHP officer. He told me how people register stolen cars.
You stole a car and then bought a wrecked version of the same car and switched the VIN plates.
Later he showed up in a Shelby Mustang. Always wondered about how he got that car?
Later he became an attorney, worked for the DA's office and is now a judge.____________________

Reading through your post I wondered how this would affect cars (we know & love) that have a history of VIN tags disappearing because of faulty attachment or attachment to inappropriate location.

...or, you wrecked your car with no insurance to cover it, so you go out and steal one of the same year, make and model, transfer VIN plate and "you've got your car back again like nothing ever happened". You can even part out the wrecked car, so you end up "ahead of the game".
I think there are LOTS of Corvettes out there with VIN tags that don't match the frame VIN derivative. But, who ever really checks frame numbers?
I've even seen several Corvettes with VIN tags that weren't even from a Corvette. Want to "upgrade" from an old "junker" Chevelle or Chevy II you have paperwork on? Steal a Corvette and transfer the VIN plate. Now you have a Corvette you can register and, even, sell to someone else. Other than, possibly, NCRS-types, who ever checks that a VIN tag is actually a Corvette VIN tag?In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

So, when we see such an occurrence are we morally or legally bound to speak up?
Don't know if I would have the guts.

Re: switching VIN tag legal?
Months later, he found his car at a strip club; a stripper was the new owner. He called the Detroit cops. The VIN tag was for an Impala. The cop's position was that the title matched the VIN; it's OK.
He didn't want the car back, so he didn't push it.
Maybe the cop got special consideration from the new owner?- Top

[quote=Bill Mashinter (1350);464797]Happened to a friend in the 70s. His '65 was stolen. His insurance paid for the car. He was happy.

Wouldn't suprise me as the last Mayor (Kwame Kilpatrick) got a lot of special considerations, including a special cell.- Top

So far, only in Oklahoma - one of our 1st-Generation ('67-'69) Camaro guys is an attorney, and got the law written and passed by the Oklahoma legislature last year. Fake trim tags are rampant in the '67-'69 Camaro world, especially on Z/28's, SS's, 427 COPO's, and Pace Cars; about 1/3 of those cars advertised for sale on-line have fake trim tags - we (CRG) have been tracking them for years.- Top
