Simple install once you get past the left side rear wheel well. Use your old harness as a "fish" wire. Don't chance it too easy to change.

.............it's a piece of cake ......... . I have replaced about 6 of them. It's a little tricky, but can be done. You have to go up in the fenderwell and grind out some of the glass. I have found it is easier to pull the wire from the trunk to the front the better way to do it. Private message me , if you want. Thanks,

Thanks guys I appreciate it, mine is cut near the hinge connection. Im guessing it keeps on going and connects at another point as I havent purchased the harness yet. Ive had this thing for 20 years and I still learn more about it thanks to folkes like you. Soundes like its not hard to fish it through the lid.

          Re: Trunk lid wire harness

The wire in the trunk lid is part of a larger harness that goes from the drivers kick panel through the drivers side sill, branches to the gas tank sender, branches to the trunk lid, and continues to the tail lights. So I assume you plan to replace the entire part. Alternatively you could just splice the trunk lid wire back into the harness from which it was cut. That spot would be dehind the trunk divider cardboard up above the drivers side rear wheel.

If you plan to replace the whole thing let me know and I'll fill you in on all the procedure and issues.

Background: The factory assembly manual calls for a pull wire in the door sill and another over the rear wheel into the trunk before the fiberglass body panels were put together. However the harness installers found it was almost impossible to pull the harness into the trunk because the pull wire was bonded to the fiberglass at the joint between the wheel well and the trunk division panel. So they gave up on that approach and installed the rear harness before the body panels were assembled. This results in the harness being pretty much glued in place. To the extent there was any opening left between the gas tank compartment and the trunk it was filled with a very sticky dum dum...which further impedes ability to pull the old wire through.

Wow Troy, sounds like I got my hands full. The car is not nearly ready for paint so I think I could run the harness at any time. Thanks so much for the input!!

              Guy,

I've done a few and its really not that hard. You will have to dig out the dum dum in the rear quarter panel to get the old harness out, but once you have done the job you'll see its a nice afternoon project. PM me if I can be of any assistance.

Using a hair dryer on high or heat gun on low heat to warm up the dum dum makes it an easier job.

                    Re: Trunk lid wire harness

On my '57 I just removed the wires from the front harness connector and fished the harness from the front kick panel to the trunk by myself. I used stainless aircraft safety wire and connected the old harness to the wire when I removed it from the front front access hole. I tied the wire off at both ends while the body work was being done and reconnected the new harness to the fish wire. It took me about 15-20 minutes of back and forth wiggling to get through the rocker panel but after that it was smooth sailing. Just take your time, feed and fish, and don't force it.
