    Expansion Tank---Repaired?

Attached is a picture of my expansion tank. It appears the tank has almost a fiberglass like material located at the rear of the tank and located between the 3 & 6 o'clock positions with radiator cap opening being the 12 o'clock position. Could this material been applied during assembly to minimize friction between the tank and the evaporation housing? If so, what was this material? This is a AC car.

The tank does not leak and I believe it to be original to the car. The numbers are Harrison 3155416 72 G.

    Thanks--Mark

That is a replacement tank made in July 1972 (72 G).

      Mark,

That expansion tank was repaired by someone. The factory never put any type of anti-wear material on the tanks. It is also a replacement tank and not original to the car based on the 72 (year 1972) G (month=July).

      Best Regards,

        Mark -

Looks like a previous owner's Bubba repair for a leak, possibly caused by over-polishing the thin aluminum tank (which wasn't polished originally).

By the looks of this "repair", the person that did it had no shame, at all.

I recently changed out my battery on my 63 (again) and I found a similar substance on the bottom of my tank, but it was white corrosion build up from the battery. I had a heck of a time getting it off, and after I did, it left the aluminum with a some what pitted/rough finish in that area. I always dread handling my tank as it is a 63 with bead rolled fittings which are more delicate than the 64-67 welded fittings. And have you seen the prices lately for correctly dated repros? Wow!

Your 67 in polished form looks nice, but like John said, that tank is made with some pretty thin stuff and besides, it's not correct. Guess it's time to shop for a new and correct tank.

Thanks to those who have responded.

I will add the expansion tank to my list of components that need to be replaced. I agree with the reason for the patch was likely done to minimize the fracture of the plating as the plating is peeling adjacent to the repair.
