    62 Corvette VIN tag attachment

The VIN tag on my 62 came loose because of rust.
Anyone know a good way to re-attach it? Can it be re-spot welded or maybe Liquid Steel or some other adhesive??

    Thanks, Roland

    Roland,

To properly reattach it, it should be welded as it was done originally. I believe the tag is stainless steel, so you would need to find a meticulous welder who knows how to do it properly. I'd want to see a test process by the welder before I'd let him(her) have at it with the real deal.

If you want to just keep it safe, you could JBweld it back on, but I'd recommend if you go that route to safeguard it permanently with either zip ties or round hose clamps at each end. This approach could be leaving it suspicious looking to any DMV or law enforcement folks though. If you do this I'd also recommend you carry a copy of your title, or other proof of ownership if your state doesn't require title(like NH for older vehicles) with you at all times and maybe a few photos of any other vin identifying photos.....like the frame vin stamp.

p.s. I still cannot believe the decision was made to weld these things on the column back then.

While welding is the best way to go there are many good epoxy adhesives that will hold as good or better then welding. Just make sure that both surfaces are clean and rust free before applying epoxy. Rich
