    part number help......

    Joe Lucia,
    I have a shifter bracket that I can't identify the application of. GM part number is 3887440. I don't think it's a Corvette part as it doesn't appear in my parts book. Can Joe or anyone tell me what it's application is? Thanks, Bill

          That's what it is. It's applicable to 1966 Corvette ONLY and is the shifter's transmission mounting plate used prior to the design change which mounted the shifter to a frame-mounted bracket.

          GM #3887440 was discontinued without supercession in October, 1977.

          So, how is this plate different from the one used for 1963-65? I don't know.

          By the way, Bill, if you can post some photos of the plate, maybe we can figure out how it differs from the earlier plate

                  Attached are the photos of the 3887440 you sent me but were unable to post. The photos are excellent.

                  Also attached is a photo of a reproduction of the 64-65 plate, GM #3846848. Assuming the reproduction is correct (which I believe it is), you will note a considerable difference between the 3887440 and the 3846848.

                  Why the difference exists is completely unknown to me. The 1965 extension housing, to which the plate attaches, was the same as 1966. The 1965 and 1966 shifters were of different part numbers but, as far as I know, they are 100% interchangeable. In fact, the 1966 shifter replaced the 1965 shifter for SERVICE with no requirement to also replace the plate.
